New Bad Ancient article is out, with a new contributor from @uonclassarch.bsky.social ... so obviously it is about Sparta! www.badancient.com/claims/ares-...
badancient.com
Was Ares the patron god of Sparta?
The Greek god of war, Ares, seems like a natural fit as the patron god of Sparta, but how prominently was he worshipped in this supposedly militaristic society?

Yeah, there was a prominent cult to them and they held important cultural significance in Sparta, but nothing compared to that of Athena, Artemis and Apollo

Took my 11yo to the videogaming museum in Sheffield today and found these two beauties! Wasn't happy to see things in glass cases as exhibits that I distinctly remember playing as a kid. That was just rude.
Video game set up with an old tv and console. They sit on top of a blue table and a red stand for the tv. The creen is small with a pixellated image of Mickey and Minnie Mouse in a forest.A tv and beige Commodore 64 sit on top of a black sand. A purple seat is in the foreground. The screen is black and blue with some white text. The game's name is Anarchy.

Working through a draft of a new Bad Ancient article submitted by a new contributor. Always an exciting prospect, but I am particularly happy because this question on Spartan religion has been in our backlog for years!
Screenshot of a webpage with a black background and white writing. The website is BadAncient.com and the article is titled 'Was Ares the Patron God of Ares?'. There is a colour photo of some stone ruins on an ancient temple on a grassy hill.

New books have arrived so I can practice my Sanskrit (I'm definitely not procrastinating from the book I need to finish). Very excited to find that there is a Loeb-like edition of some texts (i.e. dual language), less excited to have numerous book retailers claim to have then but actually not!
Five green books sit on a light brown book shelf. They form the first five books of the Ramayana. In the background are a load of other, unrelated books on the shelf. The books' green covers have black and white text. One is facing out and also has a line drawn bow and arrow on the cover. The other four only have the book spines visible, they each have a black circle at the top with a white elephant's head in profile.

New episode alert! @drdragases.bsky.social joins 101 to give us a crash course in Late Antiquity, a fascinating period that gives Game of Thrones a run for its money. Was the Roman empire really 'split in half'? How did Christianity become the official religion? And when did Rome *actually* fall?

Starting a list of things that have inspired a love of ancient history since 2000 - films, book series (kids, YA and adult), massive non-fiction books, video games, TV shows ... it is a long list. There is huge interest.

I hope so. 300 had a similar effect for a short while - as did the Rome: Total War games.

I was in a very critical Ancient Civ A-level class when Troy came out ... but there were only 4 of us. 300 has been torn apart by academics since it's release, but things didn't go viral in the same way in 2006 I suppose.

Percy Jackson, yep forgot about that! Also Harry Potter - it was translatated into both ancient Greek and Latin. There is no doubt ancient myth is a huge market for entertainment.

I am also growing tired of any take, at all, about the Odyssey film and academia that does not acknowledge that films lile this have not resulted in our departments getting more funding or support in the past 25 years. But are in fact being shut down in the backdrop of all this

In my life time? Gladiator, 300, Troy, and Alexander all come to mind and all since the year 2000. What happens each time is people say it will save the study of ancient history, it is loved for a bit before the next big thing happens: all while ancient history depts across the world shut.
