For adults who don't love reading and parents of struggling readers. Here, we challenge the idea that literacy defines intelligence.

I did a video on how some people choose not to promote to supervisory positions because a lot of jobs require studying manuals and testing on those manuals for leadership positions. This comment was a response I got, so I’m further clarifying what I meant here.

Always, ALWAYS ask this when you’re transitioning your child to a new school

Think learning to read is just ABCs? It’s actually a complex 3-step drawing process for every single letter. ✍️ In this clip from The Back Shelf Project, we break down why "decoding" is the secret to literacy and why many struggling readers get stuck seeing words as images.

Something that changed my perspective: There are adults moving through the world who can’t fully read simply because support ran out. Most people never realize this.

Some disruptive students with perceived attitude problems might be lashing out because school doesn’t feel safe for them. Remember, the system is set up so that only specific types of students progress with success.  Those who are left sitting in their own anxiety will never share it.

I was feeling “ranty” today. ‘Nuff said. 💖 We can’t even come together for the kids in school right now. Yikes. 😬

Struggling with reading doesn’t mean you aren’t smart. Too many intelligent people struggle with reading, literacy, or comprehension because the education system failed to provide the right supports, if any. Reading accommodations are not shortcuts. They are access. #literacy #adultliteracy
An adult man is standing in front of a ladder where the bottom rungs are missing. He can’t climb. Next to him are children cheering on a little boy who can climb his ladder because none of the rungs are missing.

People describe reading so differently. That’s why one approach never fits everyone.

Accommodations are not cheating or shortcuts. They exist to remove barriers, not to give unfair advantages. Extra time, audiobooks, and assistive technology support readers with dyslexia, ADHD, learning differences so they can access the same learning as everyone else.

One of the best things we can do for literacy is remove time constraints. Wanting children to read faster makes sense, but speed comes after basics. We wouldn’t put a new driver into a Ferrari. First drivers learn rules, control, & confidence. Reading works the same way. Fluency comes from mastery.

The way we speak to people learning to read has an extremely significant impact. Even “you can do it” can frustrate someone when they clearly feel they can’t do it without extra assistance. Meet them where they’re at and watch them bloom!
