I've changed my opinion on that slap. Always thought Mr W. encouraged MM to really go for it for authenticity, but I now realise it's a pulled strike. (If that's the right term?)

There's a kind of karma in seeing Chaney Jr playing the role his father would undoubtedly have taken on in the '31 Dracula. He lacks that almost aristocratic charm we associate with the Count, but it's a performance of subtlety and his trademark sympathy.

What the fuck is wrong with dog owners round here. Another mutant muscle with a mouth and bad attitude attached just went for Torgo after it slipped its owner. Luckily I manged to just about get in the way and hold the beast off. This is the 4th time at least in as many months. Control your dogs!

It's a wonderfully moody and atmospheric little gem. I've never considered it as a sequel to the previous two movies, more of a reimagining of the Dracula myth. A proposed title was 'The Modern Dracula', which perhaps indicates Universal's intent to move away from established vampire lore.

Everything you'd expect from a Hammer movie, plus the existential concept of soul-swapping. I find that pàrt of the plot fascinating, but I know it divides a lot of people. Peter brings his usual brisk authority to a role he's now very comfortable with. Certainly one of the best in the series.

Well, it's probably not the best movie you've ever posted, but it's not without a kind of ultra-cheap, am-dram enthusiasm and energy. It had a quick change of title to appeal to newly invented teenagers,who I can imagine enjoying this as a date movie at a drive-in.

It deliberately takes on a lighter, much more humourous tone than the '27 version. Perhaps an understandable choice after the grinding years of the Great Depression. All the old, creepy house tropes - including portraits with eye holes, which always makes me laugh. Terrific entertainment.

For me, this a challenging watch. But that's good, it does us good to be taken out of our comfort zone occasionally. I can appreciate the many good things about it, but it's not a movie I enjoyed or will ever return to.
