BTW: Aircraft contrails heat up 🇪🇺 14.6× more than the global avg. And night contrails 2.5× more than daytime (Teoh et al. 2024). Contrails make up 57% of aviation's total heating effect – likely even more over Europe's busy skies. More night trains = less of the most damaging emissions. 🌙🚂

Nox did it: The 🇩🇪/🇫🇷 startup convinced major investors of plans to offer single/double-cabin #nighttrains in refurbed coaches. The 2M€ pre-seed investment nearly doubles prior pre-seed investments (1.1M for Midnight Trains) allowing NoxMobility to continue operations and to build a 1st prototype.

Bad news: ÖBB has amended its contract with Siemens Mobility for the delivery of new passenger coaches. This means that no further Nightjet trains will be ordered (for the time being) – 33 seven-coach units were planned, 24 of which have been delivered to date.

📅 On 07/05, EU 🇪🇺Commission finally published its Guidelines on Track Access Charges. We urged recognition of #nighttrains as own segment. ✅ While regulatory change is still needed, the Guidelines now promote this and ✅ recommends to only charge direct cost for night trains. A great step forward!

With regard to #nighttrains the EP hearing of the Commission's transport candidate Tzitzokostas was rather disappointing. Not more than the vague target of connecting Europe's cities "also by night train". But other rail issues like ticketing, ETCS and TEN-T seem to get more weight - which is good.
