it occurs to me that maybe she *did* go through with it she threatens to make him a "newspaper scandal" he later says "is it not enough to turn half the town against me?" the historical Augusta Tabor did give an interview to the Tribune in 1883

just realized this quote also shows up in Duane Smith's book, so I had read it before, but it was before I'd had enough experience to clock it lots of that happening right now 😅

the answer seems to be after the first run!

Virginia Mims is the sort of singer that makes everything else disappear for a moment the number of times this run that she has brought me to tears just from the beauty of her singing is absolutely unreal

was just looking back through some things and noticed that the Baby Doe casting got changed at some point I'm sure Deanna Breiwick would have been lovely, but I'm glad we got Virginia Mims she's been absolutely stunning in the role

back up to Central City today to see Figaro, and it was absolutely magical - it was the training artists cast, which meant that most of the crowd was other opera singers supporting their friends, so the energy was WILD it also meant that the entire Baby Doe cast was sitting in the row behind us 😂

meme of Ralph frim the Simpsons getting thrown through a window. the text reads "my kidnappers returning me after listening to me talk about Douglas Moore and John Latouche's 1956 opera The Ballad of Baby Doe for 17 hours"

The Fine Ladies Walk replaced an aria called Wake Snakes which, based just on the words, is pretty meh HOWEVER look at these lines that preceded Wake Snakes
Image from Emerson Buckley's piano/vocal score from 1956 which includes the aria Wake Snakes. The intro lines read "[who] cares what they think? Listen to the music. Doesn't Horace look dashing tonight? I wish our two girls were here for the fun"

gotten through act I in the piano/vocal score of 1956 and no luck so far, but I did find some other interesting things my favorite so far is a huge section of "What are you looking for Horace?" that got cut

WHAT LINE DID YOU CUT
She was always adamant, she said, about not playing Baby Doe as a gold digger, or perhaps in this case a silver digger. Her character already draws the animosity of half the house. ''There's no way to overcome the anger of women in the audience,'' Ms. Sills said.

So, she said, she even excised a line suggesting that Baby Doe connives her first encounter with Tabor. ''You have to play it as a chance meeting,'' she said, ''a bolt of lightning.''

''I believe it was a great love affair,'' she added. She said she still found it hard to keep dry-eyed at the end when a dying Tabor sings, ''You were always the real thing, Baby.''

I'm not able to make the performance today - one of our friends passed, and we'll be dancing at his memorial today - so my friend/roommate is taking my ticket poor guy has heard all of my rants this month 😂 but he seems genuinely excited and I can't wait to hear what he thinks afterwards

thinking on this today, I had what I think is a memory of being struck by this before, and I think Loveland might have done the same thing in 2023? possibly/probably this happens in a lot of stagings - it certainly should do anyway

OHO broke my own heart look what we get during Baby Doe's last aria - right at the end, right before she (it's implied) dies at the Matchless Mine she then smiles softly sings the last line the curtain closes
sheet music from The Ballad of Baby Doe - right before Baby Doe dies, we get a little invitation home from a heavenly Horace

also, the SOUND you can hear everything nicely in the orchestra seats and it's perfectly fine but holy hell, the sheer volume of the big chorus moments from the balcony, just incredible

I think seeing this run so many times has been good for me not just because I get joy from getting to see it, but on a deeper level, I think it's grounding me a bit

another lovely show I've been sitting in the front orchestra rows off to the side for most of the run but today we were in the balcony it was nice to see all the things I'd been missing from the wings

So fleet the works of men Back to the earth again Ancient and holy things Fade like a dream Found a photo of the drop curtain from the Tabor Grand Opera House which features this inscription (bottom middle, difficult to read from this photo)
the drop curtain from the Tabor Grand Opera House in Denver. It features a stunning painting of ancient ruins. Barely visible at the bottom is an inscription from a poem by Charles Kingsley: "So fleet the works of men, back to the earth again, ancient and holy things fade like a dream"

ok I'm rethinking this a bit in general, and I think it's because Ashraf Sewailam is just so dynamic in the WJB role that I'm seeing it differently

as an aside for Disability Pride Month, this article about Weston Hurt is great "Each time he sang for a company, he’d wear a suit and pin or sew the sleeve of the right arm up. While consistently told he sounded fantastic, he was frequently overlooked." www.seattleoperablog.com/2017/08/embr...

I was thinking this three years ago, and I only *just* stumbled on this interview with Frances Bible talking about the role and once again I WAS ONTO SOMETHING APPARENTLY babydoe.org/wp/wp-conten...
Very religious and proper, you know. And typically New England.
Coming from that part of country myself it helped me a little to understand the
character and…uh I find that, well, to be truthful the first performance I did of
it I was more worn out than I was when I...I am when I do Amneris in Aïda,
because I find it more taxing, because the emotion is all held inside. You know
when you do Amneris you can, you know, chew the scenery and carry on a
bit. But New England people don't show their emotions that way. They're all
inside you. And…I'm a….I love to eat. (This is leading to something.) But
when I was…for three hours after that first performance I couldn't even
THINK of eating or anything. I was just worn out…emotionally, you know.

this bit popped into my head at work just now and made me feel things so there's that I guess
screenshot from the score of the Ballad of Baby Doe - this is about a measure and a half during the end of the second act where Horace sings "Baby Doez my beautiful Baby Doe." The music is really tender

last night was opening night for the Ballad of Baby Doe at Central City (2026) and I had a really lovely evening I treated myself to dinner at the Teller House and checked out the pre-show talk, and had a good cry in the opera gardens after the show it was a very nice night

ok so turns out you just need to cast Ashraf Sewailam I stand corrected
the incomparable Ashraf Sewailam as William Jennings Bryan in the Ballad of Baby Doe, Central City Opera 2026

if there's a flaw in Baby Doe, it's William Jennings Bryan everything to do with him just goes on for absolutely ever, and his aria is boring and grinds everything to a screeching halt "Vote for Bryan, WJB!" is a banger, but it should skip from that to "Extra, Extra!" there's my hot take
100
Will-yum Jennings Bryan @babydoepod.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
also on my mind is the first subtle and gentle demonstration of Augusta's change of heart in Act II when she addresses Lizzie at the governor's ball, she calls her "Mrs. Tabor" the last time we see her before this is in "what do you intend to do Augusta"
100
Will-yum Jennings Bryan @babydoepod.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
new things hit me every time I dive down the Baby Doe rabbit hole this round, I'm struck by how both Augusta and Tabor have horrible friends
100
Will-yum Jennings Bryan @babydoepod.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
not only do I get to see it live, but it's the opera company that originally commissioned it, in the opera house that was constructed while Lizzie Tabor lived in town they do it every ten years and IT'S TIME AGAIN because I'm a disaster, I do actually have tickets to all nine performances
