Oh my goodness! My dad used to tell me about Buck Ruxton too when we drove up to visit my grandparents in Caton.

These were wonderful and did sterling public service in making the public aware of Pevsner. Meades on Worcestershire was a particular highlight. But why did the BBC make so few? Surely not expensive and there are lots more counties. Could they find no-one who liked the architecture of Cornwall?

Anglophone, yes, but profoundly unsympathetic towards the UK and, I think, increasingly the US. He stretches his commentary into areas where his expertise is thin but I think he has some claim to bring a broad perspective re Crashed.

It’s not just about ‘the regions can rule themselves’ it’s also we have places outside of London that are big and important enough to justify a Prime Ministerial presence.

Well yes Linus is Finnish but he’s lived in the US for decades and I’d guess 90% of contributions to Linux are from the US so calling Linux ‘Finnish origin’ is stretching things a little!

I’ve been using Orion on the iPhone for a few weeks now and it’s definitely a viable - and I’d say often more more intuitive and fluid - alternative to Safari.

What a treat. LPO are my favourite London orchestra and Ed Gardner is a star. Bit of a pity he’s moving on.

Ah sorry no idea where the non came from - meant to say US scene!

Agreed and there was a thriving non US home computing scene which was actually more pervasive than Apple - Commodore, Atari, Tandy and more!

The IBM PC which established a semi-open standard and had all the value accrue to semiconductors (Intel) and software (Microsoft).

Didn’t the US fine DB several billion for LIBOR rigging that took place in London?

I have a vivid memory of a new Gatso camera in a very sleepy Surrey village getting attacked twice in the space of about a fortnight in 2004 or so. Second time it looked as though someone had lauched a missile at it!

Tooze is very insightful but can’t understand his remaining on X. He made some excuse a week ago based on a thread about lost cathedrals that he wouldn’t have seen elsewhere. Seems like a failure of judgment.

BTW I used to think that the default Serif looked more 'dense' than Sans but it with some testing it seems that the reverse is true.

'Branding' from the main 'Creator Screen' then 'Typography' which leads to a drop-down to choose the font option.

As a quick follow-up how did Chris Columbus make it without GPS? And how did he even tell his followers on Instagram without Starlink?

This: 'She cited the case of U.S. tech firm Palantir’s £330 million, seven-year contract with the NHS, which some hospital bosses say is no better than their current systems.' Should tell them all they need to know about certain firms selling AI snake oil.

Notes about how to write notes about how to write notes ... Substack will eat itself eventually. That's if SLOP doesn't eat it first.

I'd have thought likely to lead to dreadful PR for US firms that try to pull this stunt. Maybe even campaigns to boycott. It'll be obvious what's going on and can see some firms (eg Apple) wanting to avoid such bad publicity.

Agreed that there does seem to be quite a bit of luck involved. Most of my posts that get traction seem to get an artificial boost onto the front page by one of the moderators and then they take off from there.

Don't disagree really. Funny how our media has bifurcated into the very short and the often ridicolously long though. I look at a 30min YouTube video and simultaneously think 'I don't have time for that' and 'Can't be an in depth treatment'!
