Sure this is a useful tool to law enforcement, just as being allowed to search anyone’s house without a warrant would be. They would certainly solve more crimes. They would also be spitting on the civil liberties of law abiding citizens, and we’ve collectively decided that is anathema to our values.

Bundling it all up as just “Flock” or “Automated License Plate Readers” is a boon to the companies out there side skirting civil liberties. The tech is designed to catalog everything that comes into view, making cars and people searchable by any number of attributes that the system can identify.

Interesting that the article doesn’t include what appeared as a surprise back door deal brokered by @takiskarantonis.bsky.social. The board looked to motion on the staff recommendation to deny the permit, at which point he revealed the alternative motion which staff had magically prepared for.

Outside of actual falling leaf season the landscaping companies are just doing some weird virtue signal dance by blowing around dirt and grass clippings. At best they clear walkways until it gets breezy, at worst they are blowing yard waste into the streets and down storm drains. #ArlingtonVA

The opportunity to weigh in here is against a loaded deck.The priorities are already written and forces ranking them in order to get to free text input. This gives an automatic boost to priorities that the respondent may not agree with. There is little room for a grassroots priority to rank well.
