New publication: Economic Models in the Wild: Analyzing the Argumentative Functions of Models in Policy Contexts. Philosophy of the Social Sciences (Open access) doi.org/10.1177/0048... #philsci #philecon
Screenshot of an article PDF from Philosophy of the Social Sciences. "Economic Models in the Wild: Analyzing the Argumentative Functions of Models in Policy Contexts" by N. Emrah Aydinonat. Abstract: Models are used in a variety of arguments such as explanatory, critical, and policy arguments. However, there does not seem to be a framework within which to analyze their diverse argumentative uses. This article focuses on the argumentative uses of economic models and proposes a four-layered framework (from scientific model to policy argument) to analyze the role of such models as argumentative devices, and to make explicit the gap between model results and real-world policy claims. The case in focus is the supply and demand model and its role in explanatory and policy arguments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another summer read: the revised edition of Daniel Hausman’s The Inexact and Separate Science of Economics. First read it as a PhD student many years ago—learned a lot. Still excellent, though I wish it engaged more with recent philosophy of science.

I finally read The Myth of the Entrepreneurial State by McCloskey & Mingardi. I didn’t like the argumentative style, but the critique of Mazzucato is serious. If you can get past the tone, it’s worth reading.
