"Mr. Shuck and Jive", a Jimmy Webb tune recorded by Art Garfunkel on his solo LP Watermark after S&G broke up features the last recorded performance of Paul Desmond (who wrote Take Five with the Brubeck Quartet) whose tone reportedly sounds like a dry martini tastes. The obbligato is heartbreaking.

Thus, Live/Dead, while impressively innovative, didn't reach the right receptors to fully appreciate its rococo intensity. I liked the Dead, but no more than the rest of the SFSound wave of bands. I also adored It's A Beautiful Day, once I'd discovered LSD...

I had been a casual Dead fan. I was really turned on by Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow", and noticed the reference on the liner notes to Garcia as "Spiritual Advisor", so I checked out the Dead. I liked what I heard, but I hadn't been psychedelicized yet.
