Yesterday the opening of the first exhibition of our cooperation between Kunsthaus Graz and @uni-graz.at started. So much more to come, with the first interactive public event next Wednesday #OuterSpaces
Me in an exhibition hall. Red, dark light inside. Many people in the background, and a few art installations.

Felix Pressler, a PhD student of mine, has created a nice animation of one of our quantum universes. This has a "cosmological time", i.e. you have a way to count time. The movie runs in this cosmological time, and shows the spatial shape, approximated by discrete building blocks (called simplices).

It starts to become hard to see what happens on top of the #GCP, as my vantage point does not grow with it, and the next level recedes somewhat to leave space for the terrace. But you can glimpse progress. Next month this is probably better to see, when they go on to the next level.
A very large construction site with multiple cranes. You see the outer shell with four levels of a really large building in the works. The lowest level is much higher than the others ones. Some stairs can be seen to be under construction, which lead up to the third level. A lot of construction stuff in front and around. It is slightly overcast.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to visit the current construction site of the #GCP, which reached the terrace level. With great views, this will be open to the public, and will have quite a bit of greens on it. A place to meet and discuss, and an opportunity for thinking.
A construction site with multiple levels, some cranes and a very daunting construction stairway to the terrace level.A view into the construction site. The foundations for the benches for one lecture hall are visible, as is part of the atrium and several more levels.A panoramic view from the terrace. Behind a construction site part of the city of Graz (west direction from the GCP), the Schloßberg and eventually some mountains as first level of the alps are visible.

This time the progress is less visible. On some sides you can already see the lecture halls taking shape, including the rows for the listeners. Also, on top of the building things happen. I will have a chance to visit the top in about two weeks, hopefully having some interesting photos then #GCP
A large construction site with a large building under construction. Three levels are already visible, the lowest more than twice as high as the upper ones, and a big ramp leading up on the left-hand side. Several cranes, and a lot of material around. It is sunny.

On my way to ESI Vienna for a workshop program. Meet me and discuss with me. At the same time, you can meet my PhD student George Wieland in Helsinki at #SEWM26, showing our all new results on the #Higgs at temperatures like in the early universe. More on this soon.
Me, besides an incoming train at Graz main station. It is dusky and overcast, and I have seriously bad hair day 😆

A very large construction site with multiple cranes. The construction of a very large building is visible, with three floors standing, the lowest one thrice as higher as the upper two. Lot more construction stuff in the foreground as well as more structures in construction. It is lightly overcast.

Wow. Basically an entire level appeared within a month. There is real progress for the #GCP. They promised a public event on the visiting platform of the construction site in autumn. I start to believe that this is possible.
A very large construction site with multiple cranes. The barebone structure of a building is visible, reaching up to the surrounding buildings, but not complete. It is overcast.

And onmy way back from Wrocław and #Confinement17. No changes this time. A very busy week, but good in terms of talks, contacts and discussions. And my Postdoc Sofie even won a price for her talk!
Me, besides a (fairly old) train at Wrocław main train station. There is a roof, but it's light outside.

Does not look like that much progress from this viewpoint, but a lot of the gantry has already been replaced with walls towards the back. I really believe that in summer we will have a party on the visitor's balcony on level 3 #GCP
A very large construction site with multiple cranes, a lot of gantry, and building structures reaching above street level, and several metallic structures even above most of the surrounding houses. It is sunny.

Ok, a lot has happen during the last month. Basically a complete level has appeared, actually the highest one with the large lecture rooms. This is really amazingly quick #GCP The platform in front is the roof of the bicycle garage.
A large construction site with multiple cranes. A level is already visible above ground. It is very busy, a lot of stuff standing around. A platform is visible in front, as is a construction fence. It is lightly overcast during the morning.
020 2
Axel Maas @axelmaas.eurosky.social · 02/04/2026
Ok, so there is substantial progress for the #GCP. The metal construction will carry the upper levels such that our big lecture halls will not have need for any columns, which would obstruct view.
A very big construction site with multiple cranes. There are walls visible rising above stree-level. Towards the far end, a metal skeleton is visible on the left, which is higher than the surrounding houses. It is overcast.

Axel Maas @axelmaas.eurosky.social · 04/03/2026
Wow, something clearly happens, as the #GCP now rapidly grows! The aim is that the outer shell is done by the end of the year, and we are clearly on a good path.
A very large construction site with multiple cranes. In the front, one can see what will become the floor of the ground level, but towards the far end the construction already is as high as the second level, with big metallic structures. It is sunny.

Managed to switch to a train in Linz, which will bring me to Graz basically at the same time as originally 🙂 Despite a traffic jam before Nürnberg - multiple fast trains slowed down by a slow train on the track. Sorry the odd angle of the picture, too full to have no one else otherwise in it.
Me, in a regional train. It is somewhat dusky. I wear a FFP2 mask.

Up to Darmstadt, everything worked nicely. However, die to snow, the train will not run until Mainz, but only to Wiesbaden. This is about 4 km on foot, though mostly due to a bridge over the Rhine. Let's see, whether I can catch a bus instead.

Although waste water levels went down steeply in Germany, the ones in Graz increased. So, the masks stays on as #CovidIsNotOver, and the possibilities for long Covid are all just too high, and the consequences too hard.

Just had the opportunity to visit the construction site of our new #GCP @uni-graz.at. Here are a few impressions. It is a good feeling to see take form what we initiated and pushed for, more than half a decade ago. And it is really big.
The future main entrance. A construction site at ground level. A ramp goes to the concrete ceiling of the floors below ground level. Cranes are visible and a lot of construction stuff is lying around. It is overcast.A foundation for an experiment. Below ground a concrete room, very long. A foundation almost fills the whole floor of the first visible room. Some auxiliary pillars are visible.Me in a long concrete floor below ground. Auxiliary pillars are visible and machines. I am wearing a protection helmet. The atrium to be. A huge underground room with pure concrete and many, many auxiliary pillars.

Quite cold and snowy, but more progress on the #GCP. The ground floor is basically done, and they start building up. Still everything is on schedule.
A large construction site. The construction has reached street level, and there is a lot of stuff standing around. Multiple cranes are visible, and one is currently dismantled. Its clear, and some snow is visible on the site.

And here I am.
Me, in the very fancy (Imperial Austria style) room where the event takes place. A big screen is visible with the event's topic. I am wearing a purple mask, sitting and looking away from the screen, quite some distance away. Many people are visible, sitting on red chairs.

Axel Maas @axelmaas.eurosky.social · 06/11/2025
Very substantial progress. There are new ceilings, and it is almost at street level. I even heard that soon again trucks will drive over these ceilings, to deliver parts and materials. Gives you a bit of trust into the stability #GCP

Done with this year's Covid shot. And with wastewater signals steadily on the rise, masking up becomes nonetheless important again when close to people, as #CovidIsNotOver, and I do not have time for long Covid, nor am willing to put anyone at risk.
