Shifted the compost bins, two empty to be filled during summer. A final layer of fallen leaves will be added in the autumn. Produces 3-3.5 m3 compost each year which is used in the vegetable garden and added around berry bushes.

Compost bins:
1) empty
2) compost from last year, more or less ready
3) wood chips from branches and small leafy trees
4) empty
5) compost from last year, can be used now but perfect next year
6) grass clipping mixed with wood chips, sea weed

The small stream is completely covered in ice but you can hear the water flowing under it.

-18 degrees this morning. The small stream is frozen but the water flows and creates ice formations.

Small stream covered with ice. In the middle is a small bridge covered with ice as the stream has been forced to flow over it.

The ice has thickened and created a water pressure. Water has escaped through a small hole in the ice and a formation has been built up.

First impressions of IKEA ALPSTUGA. I use an Aranet4 as benchmark. - Accurate temperature and humidity - PM2.5: unknown (air is too clean) - CO2: good enough as a green/yellow/red indictor, within +/-150 from Aranet4. The value varies in sync with the Aranet.

Basil in nutrient solution.

Basil transplants in nutrient solution. Simplest approach is to buy a pot at the grocery store and put cuts in a glass of water. After roots have grown to 2-3 centimeters, put them in expanded clay in plastic pots with plenty of holes. The nutrient solution level should be at about 2/3 of the pot.

Basil growing in nutrient solution. Three containers for about two months gives enough for the whole year.

Roots grow as the level of nutrient solution gets lower. In very warm weather some additional water might be needed but I usually skip it. To be on the safe side I replace the nutrient after about 6 weeks. When replacing, only fill the container to about 2/3 to avoid oxygen problems in the root zone.

Basil after harvest by cutting of the stem right above a pair of leaves. Two new stems emerge which are ready to harvest 1-2 weeks later. Simplest storage is to push as many leaves as possible into glass jars and freeze. Later when cooking, scratch the surface with a fork.

DOD published a low res version to hide bare grass and use the pixelation effect to create an impression of more people than in reality. But the photo seems to be real. Here are a few other images from the same place, some with better resolution.

DOD crowd picture compared to a picture from Washington Post. It shows the DOD image is indeed from the June 14 parade.

Noshornsbagge (Oryctes nasicornis) i komposten.

Dinosaur fossil discovered in a pile of tree cuts.

Either I'm becoming famous from a finding a fossil of a dinosaur head or, as my wife claim, it's a slice of an ash trunk which dried and cracked into the silhouette of a dinosaur head. We'll see.

Changing the four IKEA Starkvind filters in my mother's air purifier. They could have lasted a little bit longer but she is 93 years old and lives in a nursing home so better safe than sorry.

Kompost 2024.
