John Shields @avochie.bsky.social · 06/10/2026You can bet your bottom dollar that the govt will entirely balls up capital taxes too, ignoring the nuances that make, eg, Zucman's proposals work, and carrying on with its apparent quest to make SMEs nothing more than private equity targets-in-waiting. 010
John Shields @avochie.bsky.social · 06/10/2026The UK's tax system is mad. We barely tax some forms of business, whilst others face crippling levies - heavy/physical businesses essentially subsidise services. Stamp duty on moving house/downsizing is just bonkers. The list goes on. 100

John Shields @avochie.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Yes, latter correct: ie it's lazy, usually unfair, and in any event - and most importantly - ultimately deeply counterproductive to evicerate the centre ground (incl potential allies) on petty points of purity, and for somehow facilitating the extreme nutjobs. The nutjobs are the problem. 100

John Shields @avochie.bsky.social · 21/09/2026She was well to right of Stewart/similar. In any event, as implicit in my original post, I don't think remainers were necessarily at fault; the argument is just made by some (see attached). My point was that ppl spend a lot of time demanding purity/assigning blame, rather than working productively. 210
John Shields @avochie.bsky.social · 21/09/2026The latter was not a *centre*-right line ofc. In any event the replies here demonstrate my point. People are keener on cheap, inaccurate tribal mudslinging than they are on the compromise that effects more inclusive and productive outcomes. And all are punishèd. 110

John Shields @avochie.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Lots of the replies here are seriously wide of the mark, determined to make enemies of the very people who would have been the most valuable allies. John Shields @avochie.bsky.social · 17/09/2026It's crazy isn't it. My son won't remember now, as it was about 9 years ago, but it was a bit of a shock at the time, with me having to yank myself and him back sharply. On the Vauxhall Bridge Road in London. It felt faster but the guy must have been going 20+ mph. Didn't give us a second glance. 000
John Shields @avochie.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I've twice been hit (when driving) by cyclists breaking the rules, but never a car. I also narrowly had my three year old son missed by a cyclist jumping a light. It may be that my experience is unrepresentative, of course. But still: red is red, and cyclists should face the same penalties. 130
