This excerpt from the linked article is one of the pitfalls the engineering team had to grapple with: hitting tail latency for operations across many nodes approaches 1 with alarming rapidity. Very interesting read!

The reality of distributed systems hit us hard here - when you need to read from every journal to provide total ordering, the probability of any host encountering tail latency events approaches 1 surprisingly quickly - something Marc Brooker has spent some time writing about.
To validate our concerns, we ran simulation testing of the system - specifically modeling how our crossbar architecture would perform when scaling up the number of hosts, while accounting for occasional 1-second stalls. The results were sobering: with 40 hosts, instead of achieving the expected million TPS in the crossbar simulation, we were only hitting about 6,000 TPS. Even worse, our tail latency had exploded from an acceptable 1 second to a catastrophic 10 seconds. This wasn't just an edge case - it was fundamental to our architecture. Every transaction had to read from multiple hosts, which meant that as we scaled up, the likelihood of encountering at least one GC pause during a transaction approached 100%. In other words, at scale, nearly every transaction would be affected by the worst-case latency of any single host in the system.

I’m reading this essay I randomly encountered on substack open.substack.com/pub/laurenbu... and this passage struck me like a thunderbolt. Is GC antipathy to trans people a form of “stolen valor?”

The passage reads: Terfs cannot stand the idea that someone proudly defines themselves as a woman without having gone through the trial by fire of being sexually harassed by a middle-aged man as a minor, but instead of directing that anger toward men and patriarchy, they've been coerced into attacking people like me, who represent stolen valour. Terfs are proud of being women the same way that someone who survived the trenches is happy to have not been hit by a shell.

This passage from Trans/Rad/Fem reminds me of a section from Mike Duncan’s Revolutions podcast where he discusses how poor whites in various slavery oriented economic and political systems were often the cruelest and most severe with the enslaved people they were overseeing.

If one's entire ideology is built on a myth of essentialized superiority, of a difference between the master and the slave that is innate and natural and impossible to transcend, then legitimizing any porosity between the two contradictory categories, permitting any identification of the humane Self with the dehumanized Other, has to be treated as an existential threat, a possible catastrophe in the making.
