The artists in our Avivo ArtWorks program were excited to have a scarecrow shown at this year's Minnesota State Fair! Members of the program came up with the collaborative idea, using buttons so everyone in the program can be part of it. The two colors represent the two sides of mental health.

🧵Yesterday the Minnesota Senate voted to move $40 million in emergency rental assistance to families across this state who have been unable to pay rent in the wake of Operation Metro Surge. Avivo applauds that vote.
Dear Minneapolis Leaders,
As you are considering addressing the housing challenges created by Operation Metro Surge, we want to make sure you include the perspective of the organizations that have been on the front lines of addressing the housing and shelter emergencies the operation created. And just as importantly, consider the communities we serve, the city’s most vulnerable population, those without stable housing.
We appreciate what the City of Minneapolis has done. It recognized the need for rental assistance and appropriated $1 million for emergency rental assistance. This is a bold and necessary first step, and the need for more assistance persists.
As you consider eviction restrictions, whether they are temporary pre-eviction notice extensions or eviction moratoriums, we know they must include rental assistance. Eviction restrictions without rental assistance are debt traps. It looks like help, but it’s a mirage that traps people and creates an even bigger harm.
It is not an either-or-proposition. We need to prevent evictions and keep people from incurring unmanageable debt. Eviction restrictions alone mean that people continue to incur debt for rent they cannot pay. If they can’t pay one month’s rent, they surely can’t pay several months of rent when restrictions end.
We only have to go back four years, when the COVID eviction moratorium was lifted, to see the proof. We experienced a surge of individuals and families entering shelter because the moratorium didn’t include rental assistance; instead, it created an unintended debt trap for those it sought to help. That kind of debt leads directly to housing instability and homelessness.
Simultaneously, many affordable housing providers operate on thin margins and cannot afford another moratorium in which they are not paid. Rental assistance, on the other hand, is a win for our most marginalized tenants and the organizations that support them.

🧵Avivo Statement: Our hearts are with the loved ones, friends, and community of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse whose life was tragically taken in Minneapolis this past weekend. 💔
Avivo Statement: Avivo Statement on Recent Events in Minneapolis
Our hearts are with the loved ones, friends, and community of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse whose life was tragically taken in Minneapolis this past weekend. His commitment to caring for others and his contributions to veterans’ health are part of the fabric of our community, and we mourn alongside a grieving city during this painful time.

We know many in our community — including staff and participants — are experiencing anxiety and fear right now as tensions rise. These feelings are real, and they matter. We stand in solidarity with everyone who is seeking understanding, healing, and safety.

During this dangerously cold weather, Avivo remains focused on serving our mission — sheltering neighbors from the cold, offering warm meals, safe spaces, and supportive services — because meeting people’s immediate needs builds the stronger, compassionate community we all want to see.

Our work does not stop in moments of hardship. It continues because every person deserves dignity, respect, and care. We call for calm, for mutual respect, and for peaceful efforts that bring us back toward the safe and welcoming community that Minneapolis and the Greater Twin Cities strive to be.

We stand united with ALL our neighbors in support of one another.

We are heartbroken and stunned by the tragic killing that took place yesterday in Minneapolis during the federal immigration surge. Our statement:
We are heartbroken and stunned by the tragic killing that took place Wednesday in Minneapolis during the federal immigration surge. A life was lost, and that loss is senseless. Our thoughts are with the woman’s loved ones, and with everyone in our community who is grieving, frightened, and angry right now.

We believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity and humanity — not confronted with overwhelming displays of force. Avivo is committed to building a community rooted in respect, radical welcome, and care. We do not believe that fear, intimidation, or lethal force create safety. Real solutions come from curiosity, compassion, and the hard work of listening and problem-solving together.

We are open and we are here. We stand with our immigrant neighbors, who are experiencing heightened fear and uncertainty. We also affirm the importance of peaceful protest and civic engagement as powerful ways for people to express pain, demand change, and channel anger into hope rather than harm.

This moment calls us to protect life, honor human dignity, and refuse lawlessness in the name of law enforcement. Avivo will continue to show up with love, curiosity, and courage — and to work toward a community where everyone can live free from fear.
