Generally I don’t think it’s quite as interesting as either of AOL’s full-length albums and the spoken word vocal sample on “Lkj” overstays its welcome a bit but this is still a pretty great precursor to 2012-2017, I quite enjoyed “Trouble Rooney” and “For Kennedy” :)

Posting this at 2am because I completely forgot to earlier This was another very enjoyable album from Oneohtrix Point Never. I maybe don’t love it quite as much as Replica or Tranquilizer, largely due to some of the MIDI vocal synths he uses, but still a great record! :)

With time I think the vocal mixes (and some mixes in general) leave a bit to be desired but I honestly still quite enjoy the way the band entirely reinvented themselves on this album. It’s distinctly more lo-fi than previous releases and takes a lot more from post-rock… [1/2]

Never heard of Disco Inferno until this past week, and this album of theirs is definitely an interesting one. It’s a lot more repetitive and ambient than I would’ve thought it to be, and the choice to mix in elements of post-punk, particularly in the bass playing, and… [1/2]

Don’t feel all that strongly about it but I’d say my feelings are mostly positive. The intro and the last like 3-4 tracks definitely drag more than I’d like and the deep cuts generally range from ok to quite good. Favorite tracks off first listen were… [1/2]

First Listen Chart for September!!! Got into New Order a good bit this month, I wouldn’t normally expect it to be my thing but Power, Corruption, and Lies is honestly fantastic. Can’t really say much of anything was all that weak either, great month! 😊

Another fantastic Mahavishnu Orchestra album. First leg feels even more abrasive than most of what’s on The Inner Mounting Flame which was really cool. I still might enjoy how dynamic their debut is a tad more but still, incredible album. Loved it!!! :D

It was a bit annoying trying to sort out the files for this and getting them to work as I wanted BUT I’m glad to say it was a pretty worthwhile inconvenience as this album was very fascinating. My exposure to a lot of the No-Wave scene is pretty limited but I’ve been… [1/3]

Great emo and post-hardcore album! The band’s got a knack for melody and guitar work. Nothing all that crazy or inventive for the genre(s) but just super solid execution and a ton of fantastic songs from start to finish. Really enjoyed it!!! :D

Quite the fantastic album. Lovely blend of 60’s pop and dance music presented in a late 80’s indie-rock package. It’d have been great to listen to this sooner because this would’ve been perfect for the summer. Really enjoyed this one!!! :D

One of the best albums in the post-punk/dance-punk scene, and maybe my personal favorite of them. Incredible hooks, some of the best guitar riffs and bass-lines ever performed in all of punk history, and lyrics that have only gotten more real with time. Absolutely an essential ❤️

This album is a bit short and a little messy, but for some reason I’m still drawn in by it a lot. The tracks that are the most memorable are honestly fantastic, and the more experimental/noise-driven parts are surprisingly well done in my eyes. I could see myself… [1/2]

Sorta missed this when it dropped but i hadn’t realized until like maybe a month ago that this was a side project of Four Tet. Ended up being really impressed with it!! Definitely one of my favorite electronic albums of the year and you can very easily tell it’s Four Tet… [1/2]

This was pretty great!! The guitars can definitely sound a bit thin at points but pretty much everything else about this is on point. Honestly makes me wanna dive further into ska punk even though it’s not my first introduction to it. Kickass energy on every track, loved it!! :D

Pretty big FL for me, I’d been putting this off for a while until today. Definitely a depressing (yet beautiful) album. Didn’t hit me as hard as I thought it would but I can imagine this would hit like a truck when I’m in a specific mood. Can definitely feel a tad… [1/2]

Tim Hecker could very likely become my favorite ambient artist, this was fantastic! I think he plays around with texture a bit more on Virgins but the usage of noise and overall soundscapes on this thing are so captivating. Loved this! :D

For an 80’s synth-pop and dance album I actually quite enjoyed the instrumentation and production on this a lot. All the post-punk elements that are still intact from their older material elevate the experience substantially as well. “Elegia” felt maybe a little overly… [1/3]

Been wanting to dive into the Twisted Teens debut given how fucking great Florida Water Blues is and it’s quite good too! Not as off the walls as what they most recently put out but a super solid debut nonetheless. Gonna check out Blame The Clown next!! :)

I think it’s pretty solid overall, but maybe not something I’m itching to come back to. First leg is pretty great, classic DJ Shadow production and some experimentation with more alt rock-centered sounds. Then as it goes on it gets noticeably less interesting. Last two… [1/2]

Really impressed with this! Very close in sound to a lot of the post-punk to come out of the late 70’s just with more of a pop and new wave focus. Vocals are incredible, catchy hooks, great rhythms, and some song arrangements that feel very similar to metal?? Loved this!! :D

One of the most uniquely impactful albums of the 2020’s. It’s incredible just how much Injury Reserve, and now By Storm, has elevated their sound whilst simultaneously creating music that is both heavily emotional and endlessly catchy. A group like no other. Impeccable record.

Really damn good mathcore album. One of the earliest that I’ve checked out in the genre as well. The guitars are super angular, great rhythmic switch ups, and I love Minakakis’ intense vocal performances. Not far off in quality from Converge’s Jane Doe for me, great stuff!!! :D

New Topster!!! A collection of artists I've been getting into over the past year or so, 2 per artist. 😊 Some I've only heard 2-3 albums from so far, others I've dived deeper into. Chart is unordered.

This was fun! It’s super upbeat and features a bunch of fun samples throughout, it feels lightly adjacent to big beat in a way given how heavy it is on the drums. Recordings are pretty lo-fi and it can even sound claustrophobic at points but it doesn’t really bog down… [1/2]

Really good! As it’s their debut it definitely feels more connected to the Joy Division sound than Power, Corruption, & Lies is but I still think it’s executed in a way that showcases enough vision for the future and it sounds fantastic. Low-Life next, this was great!!! :D

I feel about the same about this as I do It Goes On, though I think this EP has a little more versatility to it which I quite enjoy. I honestly quite like that, despite not doing anything boundary pushing per se, they do this country-inspired indie-rock sound so nicely. [1/2]

Crazy that there’s been such a long gap between this and the last MF DOOM project I’ve listened to, but regardless I still very much enjoyed this one as well. Not my favorite DOOM album by any means but still great and you can’t argue with this kind of consistency. Loved it! :)
