Gifted kid. Yeah, I get it; been there. It's a set-up for an adulthood of self-doubt and imposter syndrome.

So very random of you.

And if you're *not* a word nerd, don't you think it's time to rethink your life choices?

Oh, yes, Lingthusiasm is amazingly good, and I've been following these two brilliant women for years now. If you're a word nerd like me, and you're not subscribed, what are you waiting for?

My office desk phone actually rang for the first time in several years. We do everything with Teams and other online services, so the ringing phone startled me. Wow, something so urgent that somebody is actually calling me! It was a wrong number. #theUniverseIsLaughingBehindMyBack

And, as it turns out, the birthday of a coworker, who was very aware he shares it with the two Bagginses. These two Hobbits have had a profound impact on my life in ways I never would have expected when I first picked up The Hobbit. That was [mumble] years ago, and yet remains fresh. #hobbit #LOTR

As a software developer, "brunchlibs" made me think of some sort of software library that allows an application to ingest data at a moderate rate. "How should I handle parsing this? Oh, I know, I'll link in the brunch.lib framework."

I'd explain it, but I'm too lazy

It's that getting up every morning way before sunrise to go pray that would have done me in. What, no coffee?!

And then there's "label", which has neither suffix, and constantly taunts me with the misspelling "lable".

So now I sit here in the office, listening to a couple of coworkers hack and sniff and sneeze. One is a new hire, and no doubt hasn't accrued sufficient "combined leave" to feel like he can stay home. Oh great.

That last changed in July, when, thanks to mandates from on high, we had to return to office five days a week, because "serendipity at the water cooler!". #officeMythology

I have been sick enough to stay in bed all day exactly once since the Covid lockdown. I attribute that to a combination of good handwashing practice, healthy diet, exercise, luck of the genetic draw, plain luck, and (drum roll) remote work. #lateStageStupidity

I wonder what word or phrase you'd use instead of 'amoral'

Those of us who are not transphobic are pretty wonderful. Not that I'm biased.

Also, I feel like the claim that "our product is so dangerously powerful that only the most intelligent and careful of people can safely use it" involves a lot of marketing hype.

I've done that many times with Tolkien and Le Guin.

Hmm. Reruns of Gilligan's Island or Lassie, maybe? Or maybe it was just the general zeitgeist. Come to think of it, Quicksand Zeitgeist is a great band name. #quicksand

Because every drama or adventure show in the '60s and '70s had our intrepid hero either getting caught in it, or rescuing someone from it.

I'm not sure why I'd want to use a closed source SaaS password manager that requires network access anyway. There are more resilient ways to synchronize, including several open source options that aren't tied to corporations with horrific politics.

Are these body parts plug-and-play, or do you have to download the right drivers?

Pedantic can be annoying, yes. But precision can be important when one is trying to frame things legally. If non-technical lawmakers ban algorithms, what does that end up meaning, practically?

As also a developer, I'll note that displaying posts in chronological order is also an algorithm. Computer programs are algorithms all the way down.

Yes, unfortunately. My guess is a bad ribbon cable that connects the screen. How repairable that is I don't know, as it's a hardware problem, and I'm a software developer.

And does Trumpty Dumpty not know that "America" comes from Italian, Amerigo Vespucci? Really, in the depths of his profound ignorance and lack of curiosity, I'm sure he doesn't.

I discovered this series in Libby as we were looking for audio books for a long road trip. Books 1 and 2 got us from Memphis all the way home to Maryland. What a pleasure!

I am about 2/3 through Book 5. In the memes section of Discord server for The Prancing Pony Podcast, there was discussion this morning of lapis lazuli. So I had to mention Lapis Lazuli House, of course.
