In 1982, artist Agnes Denes planted two acres of wheat grain in Battery Park landfill, Manhattan, two blocks from Wall Street and the World Trade Center. Due to the rubble that had previously been dumped on the site, the earth was barely fertile – but Denes brought it back to life.
