When to assess your risk of developing heart disease? Your Dr is now using a calculation- the PREVENT-ASCVD Equation at age 30 instead of 40 because the plaque that builds up in arteries to the heart and brain starts to build earlier in life than age 40. @mangoe93.bsky.social @drngrewal.bsky.social

If your cholesterol is “borderline” this is for you.   A major update to cholesterol guidelines was released.   It updates risk, goals and treatments. It’s not just about “bad” cholesterol vs “good” cholesterol anymore, and that’s better for you! @drngrewal.bsky.social @mangoe93.bsky.social

People of South Asian descent should have a PREVENT score calculated, and a particular set of tests tests done by their primary care provider, at an earlier age than non-South Asians. For more info listen to the episode at the Avaaz Health podcast. @drngrewal.bsky.social @mangoe93.bsky.social

Vegetarian food is not automatically healthy.    When the MASALA study scored diets by quality — healthy plant-based (emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts) vs unhealthy plant-based (heavy in refined grains, sugars, and fried foods) — the quality changed diabetes risk.

Want a simple way to assess cardiovascular risk? Check your waist circumference at the level of the belly button.   The International Diabetes Federation suggests a lower threshold for South Asian women: waist circumference less than 80 cm. @drngrewal.bsky.social @mangoe93.bsky.social

Higher parity (number of children you give birth to) tracks with higher cardiovascular risk in women. It also increases other risk factors — there are higher rates of hypertension, cholesterol levels & obesity in women who have had more pregnancies (2+) @drngrewal.bsky.social @mangoe93.bsky.social

South Asians develop heart disease at lower BMIs.   The MASALA study shows that South Asians carry more visceral fat, more intermuscular fat, and more hepatic (liver) fat, with less lean muscle mass, compared with other groups.    The reason? Find out on the Avaaz podcast. Episode out now.

Not every “South Asian” from the Indian subcontinent is at the same risk.    The MASALA study has expanded to Bangladeshi and Pakistani participants, with their research showing heterogeneity — "South Asian" is not one risk profile.   @drngrewal.bsky.social @mangoe93.bsky.social

Considering peptides, ask: Proven? Has it been tested in human studies? Prescribed? Is it approved by Health Canada/FDA? Pure? Do you know exactly what's in the product you're taking? The research is exciting but it hasn’t advanced far enough yet for us to recommend taking them at this time.

Do you know what’s in your peptides? Many online sites sell peptides labelled: "For research use only." "Not for human consumption." The problem is there's often no independent third-party testing. You may not know what's actually inside the vial. Or whether it's contaminated. Full episode out now.

There are two very different worlds of peptides. Regulated peptide medications, which have gone through years of clinical trials and have proven clinical results. And peptides marketed for anti-aging, muscle building, etc, which are experimental. @drngrewal.bsky.social @mangoe93.bsky.social

Peptides themselves aren't new. In fact, one of the oldest and most successful medications ever developed—insulin—is a peptide. The excitement today comes from scientists designing synthetic peptides that mimic or enhance these natural signals. @drngrewal.bsky.social @mangoe93.bsky.social
