The Indian Wars, the Phillipines, Haiti and Nicaragua in the 1920's, Vietnam, Nicaragua and El Salvador again in the 80's. As for would have, I "did" for Iraq and would love to get to the Ghan. Small wars are pretty enjoyable. It's the big ones, with days of artillery fire and inhuman brutality that take the fun out of fighting. But small wars (and Iraq and Afghanistan are indeed small wars) provide the rush of small combat actions along with the intellectual challenge of building personal relationships and infrastructure within the local community. Small wars are thinking wars, which I much prefer over the bloody slugfests of great power conventional warfare. Oh, and the revolution, because I'm Amuuurican.

What's really weird about that is he made a point of telling the New Yorker how STUNNED he was to be approached in the summer of '25, and asked if he would run for Senate. Why, he'd never considered it, wasn't even sure he wanted to! archive.is/4petnv

Earlier in the summer, a few weeks before Graham Platner fever swept Maine and beyond, a group of mostly millennial Democrats, coördinating with Maine labor leaders, community activists, and volunteers, many of them Bernie Sanders campaign alums, had been scouting the state for a candidate who could unseat Collins. These Democrats thought that the five-term, seventy-two-year-old Republican senator was vulnerable: her approval ratings were down, and Kamala Harris had won the state in 2024. After they saw a video featuring Platner-this one made by the local Frenchman Bay Conservancy in 2020, to stop a commercial salmon farm from building in the bay-they decided that he was exactly what they were looking for: a working- class guy with a military background and a deep connection to Maine.

Jason Shedlock, the president of the Southern Maine Labor Council, was involved in the search (and was the only member of the group who would speak on the record). "What we're looking for is someone who understands that solidarity is not a spectator sport, it's an action word," Shedlock said. He heard that Platner was "the real deal." They had their first conversation over Zoom. "The Zoom camera was bobbing up and down because he was on an oyster boat, and I just got off of a job site, and we had the conversation right then and there, with the wind blowing, and it was like talking to somebody who I would meet in a union hall."

Several Maine labor figures reached out to Katz and Calvello, who closed the deal. Platner was taken by surprise by their interest. "They're, like, 'We think that right now Susan Collins is uniquely weak,' " he told me. "We think the Democrats are going to choose a bad candidate for this race specifically, and we think that you're a good candidate for this. And Amy and I promptly told them, 'That's fucking insane. We work full time. We don't have any money.' ... We're just normal fucking people who have very busy schedules, and running for U.S. Senate is the most ridiculous thing that I could've ever heard for myself." Platner pulled up a cage. He lifted out a mesh bag full of tiny oysters, each the size of a pumpkin seed, explaining that as the oysters grow they need more space. "It's very much like gardening," he said. "I'm just thinning."

The scouting group told Platner and Gertner that they had two weeks to think it over. "About three days into it, we were, like, 'All right, we don't really want to, but we might have to,'" Platner said. "This might be another sacrifice that needs to be made in the service of the country."

Lithium is prized because it is lightweight and can store lots of energy, making it an important component in batteries for electric vehicles and as reservoirs for excess energy generated by wind turbines and solar panels. Demand for lithium-ion batteries is expected to grow between five- and 10-fold by the end of the decade, and the world must ramp up production quickly to move away from fossil fuels.

This find could contribute to that. But under Maine's recently enacted mining laws, it's unclear whether it will ever be extracted.

"We know that the Maine mining laws are such that there's not one single active mine in Maine," said Mary Freeman, who owns the land with her husband, Gary, a co-author on the paper describing the find.

"We'd have to get clarification from the state," said Freeman, when asked whether the couple planned to apply for a mining permit. "They don't have an area of the rule that explains this kind of work."

Maine's metallic mining law was designed to protect the state's natural resources and keep its water clean. But the state, and its residents, will also need lithium-ion batteries to store energy from wind and solar panels, and run electric vehicles.

Yet lithium is a metal, and state regulations passed in 2017 prohibit mining for metals in open pits of more than three acres, which would be the only way to cost-effectively extract lithium at Plumbago North.

Spent yesterday doing the "touching grass" thing. Because we had no rain during much of August and all of September, the colors this year are... pretty shit. But I found some bright spots.

This exclusion was by design. In the 1980s, as mass homelessness
