Pinterest. I swear to god. Don't walk in here with that "review your reports and violations" nonsense for an image I pinned because YOU showed it to ME. I need all these pictures of shirtless men for ART 😭

Do I REALLY need to look at my Spotify Wrapped when I already know it's going to be filled with nothing but edgy monster smut bait??? Delightfully, this is an amalgamation of playlists from all three different books I've been working on 🤣 (#1 and 5 are VOIDWALKER, #2 and 6 are Voidwalker sequel 😇)

Fionamara “Fi” Kolbeck - Smuggles contraband between parallel worlds - Horse girl (but it’s a scaled Void horse from liminal space) - Accidentally blew up an immortal’s capitol (oops) - About to unlock a fang fetish she never knew she had - 113 “fucks” in this book, and they’re almost all hers

Antal - Carnivorous immortal woven from the depthless Void beyond reality - The monster from your childhood folktales - But also a wet cat sulking in your bathtub - Thinks he’s in charge of this snarling human woman (is very wrong) - Knows how to use those claws

🚨VOIDWALKER CHARACTER ART🚨 I’ve been drawing VOIDWALKER art for over a year, and I finally get to start sharing it! Drumroll please, as I introduce:

Truly! A good romantasy has the romance and world and plot all strengthening each other, the romance as a driving force that shapes how the plot progresses. I'm always disappointed when the romance gets all the focus, and the world and character arcs are left flimsy.

S. A. MacLean | THE PHOENIX KEEPER out now!!! 🔥 @authorsamaclean.bsky.social · 30/11/2024

These are the ones that make me stop and think: WOULD I sell feet pics? No, no, of course not. Unless...

S. A. MacLean | THE PHOENIX KEEPER out now!!! 🔥 @authorsamaclean.bsky.social · 30/11/2024

Anyway, VOIDWALKER is a single-POV romantasy, but you can bet your ass that the scary monster LI is actually just a baker's dozen worth of traumas hiding in a trench coat, each progressively unraveled when the MC so much as breaths softly in his direction.

070

S. A. MacLean | THE PHOENIX KEEPER out now!!! 🔥 @authorsamaclean.bsky.social · 30/11/2024

Give me an MC and LI whose character arcs mirror, intertwine, build off of each other in such an inseparable way, that by the time their bodies finally come together, it's like they're desperately weaving their sinews into a single beating heart.

140

S. A. MacLean | THE PHOENIX KEEPER out now!!! 🔥 @authorsamaclean.bsky.social · 30/11/2024

Give me those raw character moments! Give me a love interest who is lethal and cold, so it slices even deeper when they crack into a million pieces for the person they love! Give me those viciously soft moments of vulnerability that are so much more terrifying than any antagonist!

130

S. A. MacLean | THE PHOENIX KEEPER out now!!! 🔥 @authorsamaclean.bsky.social · 30/11/2024

To be clear, I love romantasy! It's hands down my favorite genre! But it's frustrating when the hot, mysterious love interest ends up being just hot and a little too mysterious, without a solid character arc to stand alongside the MC's own. There's SO MUCH potential to be seized here!

S. A. MacLean | THE PHOENIX KEEPER out now!!! 🔥 @authorsamaclean.bsky.social · 30/11/2024

This thread is focused on contemporary romance, but a lot of the points hit home for why romantasy feels like such a feast or famine genre to me, why a ship either falls flat, or turns me feral for days.

It's truly the best and worst feeling to be in the middle of revisions, but also constantly inundated with fun new ideas for this book (and for the other book I'm drafting, setting those aside as a December treat...)

Hmm, if I think real hard, I'd probably recommend it 😇 If you like cozy fantasy with lower stakes, a slowburn sapphic romance, a socially anxious MC. And especially if you're a wildlife lover with a thylacine profile pic, since the magical creatures are based on real conservation and zookeeping!

Calm morning, enjoying how the sunlight falls on the bookshelves, working on revisions for my third book. Can you believe 2024 is almost over? I feel like I still have so much I want to read, so much I want to write. Here's to a productive weekend 🥰

My grocery store has put all the cold medicine into one of those locked cabinets. Including the saline spray. I have to summon an employee to unlock the saline spray for me. The saltwater. The regular water with regular salt in it.

The most humbling part of edits is when you have a brilliant idea for a new sentence, you find the perfect place to add the words, you pat yourself on the back for being an editing genius. Only to keep reading and discover you previously drafted the same sentence, nearly word for word a page later.

“So, you love my cozy phoenix book, that’s cool and all. But just out of curiosity, how do you feel about . . . super spicy monster romance?” Rest assured, Team Antler was immediately on board 😈

What's different? The Phoenix Keeper: cozy fantasy, F/F sapphic romance, sweet, social anxiety, low magic, contemporary world, introvert who wants to hide in a corner and avoid all people. Voidwalker: monster romantasy, F/M bi4bi romance, spicy, forgiving yourself, hard magic, splintered realities, smuggler who uses an energy sword to solve her problems.

I can now tell you one of the most harrowing moments of my author career so far, that call with my very important and professional publisher where I had to ask:

What's the same? Bisexual MC, a friendly carnivorous horse, a truly unproductive amount of pining, "help, the love interest terrifies me, but I also find this hot for some reason", importance of building community.
