A scene I love from Magi (my historical novel, out this November): in Babylon, an elder walks his sons through why the star in Aries matters to their people — Abraham's ram, the shofar, the month of Nisan, Passover's lamb. Pre-order: www.amazon.com/dp/B0HBMYZNQN #preordernow

Today I stood among the artifacts of Tutenkamun, from his sanded to his burial mask and everything in between. I’m still overwhelmed and want to return to see all this again and slowly…

While writing Magi (my historical novel, out November 1), my first question about the star wasn't what it was — it was where. That sent me into Michael Molnar's The Star of Bethlehem (Rutgers, 1999). What I found reshaped a scene I'd already imagined. www.amazon.com/dp/B0HBMYZNQN

A chisel slips from an archaeologist's hand and falls through a crack in the floor. It keeps falling. That's how Magi begins: a hidden chamber at the edge of Babylon, a stone box sealed for two thousand years. Pre-order: www.amazon.com/dp/B0HBMYZNQN

The traditional names of the Magi, seen here in a mosaic in Ravenna, originate in the 6th century. The Magi were Parthian, but these names are not. In my historical novel "Magi" (coming out in November), they carry names from their own world: Aridemus, Mithradat, Ganzabar, Bagadata. 📚

Our Magi followed what we now call the Silk Road, through oases, towns, and great cities, past merchants buying, selling, cheating, profiteering. They saw it all, and it became part of their journey. Magi, my historical novel, out this November.

Once we got into the Duomo in Siena, we were privileged to see the floor, which is uncovered until the end of October. Etched into the pavement in marble are a series of stories. Here is one.

About an hour away from us is Siena. We haven’t been there in awhile, so we got our cafe and then drove straight there. Parked near the Duomo. And walked in.

Damascus has been a city of roses for centuries — fields stretching for miles outside its gates, a rosewater trade already ancient by the time the Magi pass through it. One of the worlds they walk into. Magi, my novel, out this November.

The work continues. I brought a copy of my new book to the Anglican Center in Rome. I got to chat a long time with their librarian and one of the reverends who was studying there today. They were intrigued about the history behind the book and what brought me to write it.

Meet Aridemus — Mithradat's father, chief Magus to King Phraates of Parthia in Magi (my novel, out this November). In many ways, he's the heart of the story. Thirty years at court, advising a king who trusted almost no one. "I have earned his trust. You must earn it too. And never lose it."

The quest continues. Still in Rome. Went to this cool English bookstore in Trastevere run by two Spanish twin sisters. They’re very nice. I left them a copy of my new book, coming out on November 1. Encouraged them to carry it especially around the holiday season.

Meet Mithradat, narrator of Magi (my novel, out this November). Readers see the whole quest through his eyes. From the fire temples of Parthia, across the Silk Road, into a Judea in turmoil under Rome's shadow, he finds a world far bigger than he imagined — searching for the meaning of the star.

Before I introduce the people in Magi (my novel, out this November): there's no historical record of the Magi as individuals. Not one name survives. What exists are fragments — Parthia, Zoroastrianism, the star, the Silk Road, Judea under Herod. Next week, meet the man I built from them.

A star appears where the astrologers say none should be. Two kings react very differently to the news. Four men leave home to find out why. That's the trailer for Magi — my historical novel out this November, told from the side of the Nativity story almost no one tells. One minute. Watch below.
