Mutual Obligations (and a low Jobseeker payment) "make the prospect of workforce mobility too risky to consider." I wish there were more employed ppl who understood this affects them too. Also, it's just a 💩 service & a waste of $.

Hi folks. We're calling for the abolition of mutual obligations in Australia's welfare system, especially as currently implemented by DEWR's targeted compliance framework. Check out the article here: auwusecretary.substack.com/p/abolish-mu...

Abolish Mutual Obligations
They're not just bad for the unemployed. They're bad for all workers in Australia. Yes, salaried employees, you too.

#MeaningfulEducationWithoutPunishingDebt - Australia's failure to prioritise training outside of influential industries with the Prime Minister's ear has let down entire generations of job-seekers hoping to improve their prospects of fulfilling employment. We need free post-secondary education.

#SpecialistHealthcareForAll - Australia's public hospital system has collapsed in the wake of COVID-19. People in poverty simply cannot afford the healthcare services they need for diagnostics and treatment in the private healthcare sector, which doesn't bulk bill. Action is overdue to correct this.

#FairCompensationFor30YearsOfFailures - The rot in the welfare system started under Paul Keating's prime ministership. Neoliberal austerity, outsourcing, a continuous erosion of welfare rates in real terms (i.e. affordability of goods and services vs payment rates) has been ongoing since 1995.

#AccountabilityInGovernment - ministers should be criminally accountable for the malfeasance of their departments during their respective terms, and so should public service executives. Given that people have died due to departmental failures, ministers and executives should face murder charges.

Other demands: #EndCompulsoryIncomeManagement - autonomy over income is a human right. #TransparencySavesLives - we need the ABS and departments of Social Security/Employment, Education and Workplace Relations to step up their game on service delivery and economic tracking of poverty & its causes.

4. Everyone deserves a home. We need roofs over people's heads. 5. Inequities in housing and healthcare access are killing people. This needs to stop. These are our core demands. #RaiseTheRate #AbolishMutualObligations #NobodyDeservesPoverty #SocialMurderIsMurder #EveryoneDeservesAHome

3. Revert the settings to qualify for the Disability Support Pension back to before Julia Gillard tinkered with them to make it almost impossible to access unless effectively bed-ridden. The LNP have turned the screws on discretion around Gillard's changes, and Albo's ALP hasn't even loosened them.

To be clear: That's just a statement of fact. Our demands are: 1. Increase the income rate for people in poverty above the Henderson Poverty Line. 2. Immediately cease and dismantle Australia's unnecessarily punitive welfare compliance system, branded as "mutual obligation".

As much as we would love the Australian Labor Party to revert to its original humanist/socialist values and stop punishing the poor for the fact of our poverty, it seems they are committed to the bit. The only party platform with a plan to address poverty in a meaningful way is The Greens.

Most importantly, while the ALP has inherited a steaming crock of shit from a neoliberal/fascist-adjacent LNP coalition, all they've really done since is pour petrol on it, set it alight and say "Look - it casts light now." They have clowned around after every CPI increase saying "LOOK AT US!"

The outcomes for jobseekers and students have barely changed under the current ALP government. Yes, they've inherited existing systems from the LNP, but the privatisation of the CES in the 1990s was done by Keating. The ALP are not clean of blame for the awful circumstances of welfare recipients.

We also aim to achieve political outcomes by encouraging political parties to embrace their better angels and stop treating people in poverty like an economic commodity for capitalists to profit from. We seek an end to the horrible DES and Workforce Australia for-profit compliance systems.

Our first order of business on this new account is to set expectations. For those not familiar with our work, we provide limited advisory/advocacy services for people struggling with the onerous burdens our welfare system places on them. We run an advocacy service via our website www.auwu.org.au
