...we see it differently at a pretty fundamental level. neither of us are wrong. that conversation became the starting point for a project i'm calling 'the intelligence collective of seattle'. i wrote about it here: www.seattleintelligence.co/writing/a-st...

i started something over the holiday break. my wife and i spent a morning talking about ai. what it means for how people work, whether ai-assisted art is still art, what gets lost when machines can do things that used to require years of practice. she's a pastry chef. i work in tech...

Where tf is the non-political side of Blue Sky? Don’t get me wrong, I love reading through all the hot takes, news, and hot seats on here but f*ck my mental health, it needs a break sometimes.

If you’re even considering downloading DeepSeek, just know the data’s not yours. So don’t do it.

It’s not a buyout? It’s an agreement to continue working at home and then lose their job in September.

In case it’s unclear… Trump’s strategy is to consolidate power by eroding checks on presidential authority (dismantling oversight of federal agencies, congress, and international alliances) while expanding control over law enforcement. He doesn’t want to lead. He wants to rule.

Just bought a PlayStation Portal. Is the cloud gaming really as good as the reviews are saying? I don’t play any FPS that require quick reaction times. Just games like BG3, Dave the Diver, Stardew Valley.

Accountability is good. Punishment without context isn’t. It’s hard to accept, but most people don’t “cancel” others to create accountability. They do it to feel virtuous. Growth, and room for repair should matter more than speed and finality.

This idea of “exploration > certainty” has been a big theme for me lately. It’s shaped how I think about work, leadership, and even my own personal growth. I broke down my perspective more in my latest Substack: open.substack.com/pub/austinr...

Independent thinking isn’t about rebellion, it’s about curiosity. It’s about asking “What if that isn’t true?” That instinct has caused friction in my work, family, and life. And I stand by it. If more people value exploration over certainty, we’d be better off.

If any of this resonates, I invite you to read my full post on (and subscribe!), where I share personal stories, reflections on the COVID era, and thoughts on work, cancel culture, and more. It’s my first post, so I’d love to hear your thoughts!

My takeaway? Balance is essential. Conformists create stability and order, but too much of it becomes oppressive. Independent thinkers create progress, but too much of that can lead to chaos. Macro balance, micro independence, that’s the goal.
110
austin @austin-reece.bsky.social · 15/12/2024
And then there’s social media. Algorithms reward emotional outrage, not curiosity or thoughtful debate. Conventional-minded enforcers dominate, while independent thinkers (with “strong opinions, loosely held”) get drowned out. It’s a game most of us don’t realize we’re playing.

austin @austin-reece.bsky.social · 15/12/2024
At work, the same patterns emerge. Companies say they want “disruptive thinkers,” but in practice, they want compliance. Leaders say, “challenge me,” but most people play it safe. Over time, it creates a system people secretly hate but can’t escape.

We’ve all seen this play out. Mobs form, punishments are handed out, and nuance dies. Sometimes it’s justified. But most of the time, it’s not. I argue for more space to let people reflect, grow, and change, especially in public discourse.

One of the most provocative claims from Graham’s essay is this: “The aggressively conventional-minded cause a disproportionate amount of the world’s problems.” I reflect on that idea and how it connects to cancel culture, social media, and modern work life.

The thrill of challenging assumptions is something I can’t shake. At work, in life, even during the pandemic, I found myself drawn to exploring “taboo” questions. It wasn’t about being contrarian, it was about exploration.

I just published my first Substack post, and it’s about something that’s been on my mind for a while: conformism. How it shapes society, work, and our own lives. Inspired by Paul Graham’s 4-quadrant model, I explore where I fit and how I think it shows up in our world.

A lot of people can’t stand Zak Brown, but credit where it’s due; he took one of the worst teams on the grid and turned it into the best. When he joined in 2016, they had lost most of their sponsors, struggled with the engine, and even their drivers were mocking them. Look at them now.

Just Checo doing Checo things. No attempt to go, no clutch issue, just not paying attention. RedBull needs a new teammate for Max.

Mediums lasting 10-12 laps, softs lasting 4 ish laps (Alonso). This track is absolutely wrecking the tires. It’s gonna be a 3-4 stopper at this rate. #LasVegasGP

Another classic F1 scenario: RB claims incompetence during practice and/or qualifying and then BAM 💥 straight to the front. Max Verstappen is a beast in race trim.

I feel like I should be more on the edge of my seat as the Drivers Championship could be decided tonight. I just don’t think Landon Norris has what it takes to beat Max. He’s too risk averse imo. Hopefully I’ll eat my words.
