Overnight smoke from the Frijoles Fire settled into nearby valleys, leaving parts of Santa Fe with an Air Quality Index of "very unhealthy." Packed an extra N95 on my walk to work. The first person I saw asked for an extra mask, and I obliged.

I went to Española yesterday, and the results made the front page of the Gallup Independent this weekend
The front page of the March 1-2, 2025 edition of the Gallup Independent newspaper centers a photo of U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez standing at a podium adorned with a sign that reads "Republican ripoff: Tax breaks for billionaires, high costs for you."

Leger Fernandez is flanked by health care workers and constituents at a news conference in Española, New Mexico. They're holding signs that read "Medicaid Saves Lives" and "Don't Kill Our Rural Clinics."

The story is titled 'Medicaid protects our system, patients': Mother, health providers, lawmakers sound alarm over proposed Medicaid cuts.

I knew this story was set to appear in this week's Santa Fe Reporter, but I didn't know it would be the cover story!!
The cover of the print edition of the alt weekly newspaper Santa Fe Reporter shows an illustration of a person kneeling, their hands over their chest. Other people's hands extend from the background, touching their body. The headline reads, State of Abuse: Survey finds half of New Mexicans have experienced sexual violenceA two-page spread shows info graphics and a news story based on data from a survey conducted by the Catherine Cutler Institute at the University of Southern Maine
