Interesting graph from this Robert Armstrong article in the FT, showing the predicted cash flow payback of AI investment for the big four. I’m wondering: where’s the extra money coming from? Their cloud businesses? How is Meta going to make more money? www.ft.com/content/b31f...

Perhaps the first of an occasional series of persistently wrong ideas in Physics... I was reminded yesterday of Maxwell's completely flawed derviation of his distribution, showing that it's more important to be original than right. Can you see what's wrong? www.cambridge.org/core/books/s...

From Norman Lewis' "Voices of the Old Sea". Sadly I can't find any online reference to this Geoffrey of Ipswich dude
Although Geoffrey of Ipswich may have introduced arithmetic into England after his thirteenth-century visit to Barcelona, few rural Catalans could now even add up, let alone multiply or divide.

I did @pintofscience.uk last week. My talk was about Heisenberg's abandonment of Newton's classical orbits 100 years ago on Helgoland. Around the time I found myself describing Kepler's Mysterium Cosmographicum as his pre-breakbout concept album I realised I might be a massive ham. Loved it

This whimsical little number “J. J.” from the old Cavendish lab is traditionally sung to the tune of “Still D.R.E”

Came upon David Thouless’ grave in Grantchester today. Does anyone know the meaning of the symbol at the bottom right?

Just saw Eno at the V&A (with Brian himself at the Q&A!) and loved how some of the generative elements played on his Oblique Strategies cards containing prompts for creativity. Wonder if people found inspiration from them in the mathematical sciences eg honour thy error as a hidden intention…

I once heard another theorist talk about “going to bed with a bad idea”, which I think captures the same feeling as this New Yorker cartoon by Ed Himelblau
