I've visited there and liked it, nice place and yep great fit, I'd say yes at the drop of a hat. But (existing museums) are actual pros - meaning leaed time, planning, overheads and headcount so where I can do my little solo exhibit for < $15k - to scale it there, they'd need a big grant etc

And a correction: song title is “I Spy for the FBI”

I’d like that too but I’ll need to find collaborators / sponsors to help make it happen. I self-funded Sydney but am new to museums, exhibits there is an ecosystem needed to make more ambitious things happen

Well, there's "musicals" and then there's just music which this was, but a spook musical would actually have huge comedy potential. I literally have so much dark shit in my collection that I thought it needed a bit of lightening up, your quote fits. Cheers

Thanks for the repost - 100% Sydney needs more edutainment. I feel the nerd community is really not understood and is underserved by the current offerings. It’s one reason I decided to do this thing, and that as a nerd community that we have the skills and motivation to build our own cool stuff.

And we have these “archive bundles” from: Soviet spy Gordon Lonsdale, a Bletchley Hut 8 cryptographer, a member of the Stasi Dzerzhinsky Regiment, a member of Soviet forces in Operation Anadyr into Cuba, etc

It’s prob not museum best practise but I use “archives” two ways 1) As a “category” including all our letters, documents and ephemera, postcards - all that sort of thing 2) To describe say a box or bundle of any of the above plus photos, ID cards etc )all related to an individual)

Australian Spy Museum @aus-spymuseum.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Hmm (best publicly available source) would be various countries archives, eventually this stuff is declassified. Best (not publicly available) is IMHO through veterans, other collectors and paying bounties on objects you can name, that has worked for me via EU intermediaries.

Australian Spy Museum @aus-spymuseum.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Well - obvs I avoid modern / sensitive items. With older material you can get lucky and find relevant "operational / methods" photos or surveillance pics in Europe. I also have some nice archives including WWII US CIC, Stasi guards regiment etc and ID cards. Archives offices have plenty.

Well Josh, I do hope we are talking about the spy artefacts here. If yes the answer is I do play with them rather a lot. Sometimes my father in law (ex IBM mainframe engineer) visits to twiddle knobs and get things working again. Sometimes I invite other people around and they get hands on too!

It’s the articles like this that remind me how well named your account is. This is 2yrs after Revelle’s Sun Sea & Air, 3yrs before Keeling and about the time of Plass etc. We knew so much by 1964’s warning to Pres Johnson

Love vintage spy film posters - here's a few candidates for framing to hang on the walls at our Sydney exhibition. We'll mix interesting technical artefacts with items from the cultural history of espionage. Sounds posey but it'll look great.

I worked in IT for decades but there was not much classy vendor merch you'd really want to hang on your wall. This calendar has an embroidered fabric base, its embossed, the top is printed both sides, and it came in a lovely branded paper cover. Late 50's / early 60's had it goin' on.

The Soviets even gave him a device that could read the wiring of the US cipher machine rotors - combined with key material it led to a devastating crypto compromise. This was a driver for adopting the later KG-84 machine (noting ours is obviously a de-milled example) 2/3

John Anthony Walker led the Cold War's infamous Walker Family spy ring. A radio and cryptographic specialist on multiple ships including the nuclear submarine Simon Bolivar - he stole and sold to the Soviets huge amounts of material via Minox and 8mm film cameras, plus straight document theft. 1/3

Inside - is the centrally-mounted IR camera, top right is the large flash batter box that powers three infrared flashes mounted on the left side. At the top left is a white wire that leads to a microswitch concealed in the handle - that is to trigger the camera shutter just by moving a thumb.
