A single stroke —coloring in, filling the void
And reality tilts into its own representation.
An instant sealed in stone, while through the media drifts the image
Strange, rare, parodic —A depiction of labor without the laborer.
Alberti’s window-frame, or Butades’ wall-painting —A question of absence.
Who moves the frame?

This painting depicts Culture Minister Rachida Dati at the inauguration of a major public works project at the Basilica of Saint‑Denis (the church where the kings of France are buried). She is wearing a dark coat and holding a small hammer, removing a symbolic piece from a stone block. In the upper left, two journalists are standing and taking pictures of the event. The painting is done on a plasterboard panel prepared with textured plaster.

A small painting on textured plaster, standing slightly apart from the others, born from a detail glimpsed on the edge of a neighborhood where many buildings had recently been renovated. The work was scarcely finished when the first signs of decay began to appear, especially on the walls dressed in “fake brick” cladding. Their corners quickly crumbled, exposing the older surface beneath. In this quiet unravelling, the cosmetic nature of the renovation revealed itself, inviting us to see the surroundings as a kind of stage set — a world composed of layered façades, each one resting lightly on the next.

The representatives came to mark the beginning. The first stone was laid. The costumes, the roles —assumed. The postures, the photos —taken. "To build is, first, to stage," they say. #painting #contemporarypainting #contemporaryart #artcontemporain #peinture #art #stoneMason #stonework
Painting by Aurel Porté depicting President François Hollande at the inauguration of a major public works project at the Basilica of Saint‑Denis (the church where the kings of France are buried). He is dressed in a formal suit. On the left, a stonemason stands in a traditional medieval-style outfit, giving the scene a kitsch effect. In the foreground, a pile made of the first stones of the future structure stands prominently. The painting is done on a plasterboard panel prepared with textured plaster.

Here are the latest plants I painted. I asked several artificial intelligences to generate images of sowthistle (on the left) and horseweed (on the right) based on their names and a botanical description. I then turned these pseudo‑photographic plants (biologically plausible yet visually quite unlike the real ones) into painted synthetic portraits.

This image opens a new line in my artistic inquiries, I built it from the most ordinary urban nature (clichés included) and painted it with a roller to create a grainy, mechanical surface marked by imperfections, as if a kind of fatigue or vulnerability were seeping through the process itself.

Recent reworking of a painting I made a few years ago - Stronger contrasts - More enigmatic - Experiments with a reduced color palette and some color effects inspired by JPEG artifacts #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #painting #bskyart #artsky #visualart #pattern #art #urbanNature
Painting by Aurel Porté depicting a cymbalaria partially covering a surface of pebbles sealed in concrete. Such urban installations are common in renovated spaces; they aim to make the location uncomfortable, preventing anyone—be it a passerby, a homeless person, or a group of young people—from sitting or lying down. These structures are always designed to blend in as decorative elements of the place where they are installed.

Recent reworking of a painting I made a few years ago. It’s now simpler and more contrasted. I also took the opportunity to try new ways of applying color with a roller (using a brushes suits me less and less). #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #painting #bskyart #artsky #visualart #art
Painting by Aurel Porté. It's a landscape with small workers' gardens used to grow vegetables in the foreground. Such gardens were common in the suburbs of France. They are now disappearing because of gentrification. In the background, we can see large buildings from the seventies, made of concrete and contrasting with the gardens.

This painting is inspired by watching aquarium-assembly tutorials. I wanted to play with the image of a transparent plane that becomes, at times, a metaphor for the glass walls we sometimes feel we experience in everyday life, and at other times a reference to the plane of the canvas itself—an interface through which we believe we see, without ever actually crossing it.

Deflation #2 For years I’ve been finding black balloons on the sidewalks—leftovers from nitrous oxide sessions popular among teenagers. This tiny piece of trash says a lot about our era... [See Alt] #politicalart #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #peinturecontemporaine #artcontemporain #art
The empty, shriveled balloon also raises questions for me as an artist: can art—as a speculative activity and financial bubble—be conceived as degrowth-oriented? From my art history and philosophy courses, one characteristic stands out: art tells its own story as a grand adventure. Renaissance, avant-gardes, the race for originality, radicality, and other intellectual auctions—its narrative seems structured by an ideology of constant surpassing.

This painting is designed to lead toward the flat geometry of urban fixtures meant to deter homeless people from city centers. The aim is to formalize the degree of abstraction of the Other required to produce such abject design, while also questioning the relevance of relying on abstract vocabulary today, at a time when it seems to serve no purpose other than the complicit act of hiding (from) reality.

For the past decade, I’ve often come across black balloons on the sidewalks—remnants of collective nitrous oxide sessions, very popular among French teenagers. What interests me about this piece of litter, a social marker of suburban life, is its ability to sum up a whole cultural moment: an attraction to things that take up space while being intrinsically empty, a taste for the ephemeral and disposable, a joyful-sad relationship to partying, and a certain indifference to what comes after—the time of deflation.

This painting shows a T‑shirt hanging from a line tied to the bars of a fence bordered by a hedge. The scene could almost be ordinary — and in a way, it is. Where I live in France, I often came across ropes strung along the fences of administrative or corporate buildings. For a long time, I assumed they were remnants of posters, until the day I realized that, in these areas marked by hardship, they were in fact makeshift clotheslines.

This painting plays on our ignorance of living things, presenting a few wild plants gathered from a roadside embankment as if they were part of a jungle. The project is not just about giving visibility to an overlooked aspect of the plant world, which is often confined to botanical illustrations. Above all, it is a way to bring enchantment to everyday life at little cost—summoning visions of elsewhere from right here and affirming the porous nature of the world, where the exotic and the ordinary are one and the same, with the former merely being a fleeting moment of the latter.

Painting on mortar by Aurel Porté. The image is drawn from the photograph of a ceremonial groundbreaking events, attended by entrepreneurs and politicians. The chosen moment is when they strike a pose, tool in hand.

The aim is not to create a portrait—though the outline of a face may sometimes be recognizable—but rather to highlight a (im)posture and the connection between power and representation.

The research is ongoing, and I’m experimenting with various processes. In one case, a black felt-tip drawing serves as the base for a wash painting, applied almost like coloring.

If this reminds you of photographs you’ve seen, I’d be delighted if you shared them with me.

In the midst of packing, I found some of my first paintings. Created over ten years ago, they stem from my fascination with industrial ruins and the echoes of modernity. [see alt for more] #industrialruins #painting #peinturecontemporaine #artsky #art #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting
“The End” revisits a mining landscape that has been stripped (mostly at ground level) of many of its details. In the background, one can make out gallery entrances; to the right, a wagon and rails; above, the beginning of a ceiling dotted with bolts (elements designed to prevent collapse by holding layers of rock together). In the foreground, a barefoot girl dances, indifferent to her surroundings.

I saw in this juxtaposition a kind of answer to the question: What should we do with this modern legacy? With this bygone era? What comes next? — Dancing on the past as the simplest way to turn the present into a celebration.

Preparing to relocate, I unearthed a few paintings from my art school years. These works explore the traces of European mining and my early reflections on modern heritage. #industrialart #urbex #miningheritage #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #art #painting #visualart #lamp #peinture
“Industrial light” portrays an old industrial lamp like those found in many mines. This lamp no longer illuminates but is illuminated (by the photographer’s flash). Some structural elements (beams) from the original image were retained, while the rest has become a timeless bluish background in which the lamp floats—a relic of a bygone world.

While sorting through old work ahead of a move, I rediscovered my earliest paintings. Made over a decade ago, they reflect my search for modernity’s legacy. [see alt for more] #abandoned #urbex #caveart #forgottenplaces #art #contemporaryart #painting #contemporarypainting #visualart #peinture
“The cave” depicts a tunnel in an abandoned mine. The image is a cropped version of a flash photograph (an effect I chose to preserve).

Through this motif, I wanted to evoke three dimensions of painting:

Its mineral reality: Many pigments are the result of chemical reactions with metallic salts (iron, lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, titanium… the list goes on!), and there is no painting—at least not as we know it—without mining. Mines are astonishing places, both in texture and color; if you ever get the chance to visit one, go for it!

Its historical reality: Painting (at least the kind that has survived through time) is intimately tied to the underground world—not of mines, but of caves, whose walls were the first canvases.

Its epistemological reality: According to Plato, the painter is a producer of appearances, and therefore of falsehoods. In this sense, painting distances us from truth, contributing in its own way to casting shadows on the walls of the cave

Indeed, in the foreground of Bosch’s painting, there’s a curious, fantastical, overgrown—and surely diabolical—plant. In the composition, it occupies a space as prominent as the saint himself. As is often the case with Bosch, the plant is an aggregation of elements drawn from multiple species.

To my knowledge, this is the only instance in classical painting where such use of a plant figure occurs—and one of the rare examples of “base” vegetation (meaning: plants deemed unproductive for food or ornamental purposes) being depicted.

If you know of any other examples, feel free to share them in the comments!Saint John the Baptist, painting by Hieronymus Bosh

I find there is a particular resonance between places dedicated to preserving nature—such as greenhouses and aquariums—and works of art... [more in alt] #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #painting #visualart #figurativeart #artcontemporain #greenhouse #artsky #malerei #contemporarytuesday
Perhaps because, like art, they shelter a small fragment of reality, seeking to present it authentically and protect it from external disturbances. Or perhaps because both the greenhouse and the artwork reproduce what we call nature so ideally that they generate a paradoxical energy—an artifice devoted to negating itself, as the very notion of "natural" stands in opposition to "artificial."

However, in the context of ecological disaster, the image of the greenhouse invites further reflection: Will there always be a place for the living world we know outside of a glass dome? What is the meaning of celebrating life through images when life itself might not survive them?

So yes, perhaps art is also, in a way, a small, separate ecosystem—where rarity is cultivated and the fragility of the outside world is gathered, calling for care before it is too late.
