It’s a good time as ever to read @pagankennedy.bsky.social’s The Secret History of the Rape Kit. It’s a book for this moment, which is the same moment we’re always in as a society that continues to find ways to condone sexual assault.

Open AI/Chat GPT began emailing me out of the blue. A LOT. I’ve never used it and never subscribed to it. When I asked how it got my email, the company refused to tell me. I’d need to willingly provide my personal data to learn more. Here I am, wasting water and time for a thing I never asked for.
In an exchange with Open AI Support, an agent writes:

Hi there,

I understand that you’re not an OpenAI customer, you haven’t provided your personal data to OpenAI, and you’re asking specifically how OpenAI obtained your email address.

I don’t have information available here that identifies the source of your specific email address, so I don’t want to speculate or give you an unsupported explanation.

Separately, if you would like to request deletion of personal data that OpenAI may hold about you, you can submit a deletion request through the OpenAI Privacy Portal.

It's not just police: County prosecutors fed information like names, home addresses, court dates, and more, to ICE. The defendants I talked with didn't know – and neither did their attorneys. The practice is pervasive, and it cuts party lines. (An @injusticewatch.org partnership with @wired.com!)

The County Prosecutors Who Became ICE Informants
Illinois prosecutors shared defendants’ personal data with federal immigration agents without criminal warrants, public disclosure, or legislative oversight.

Illinois law says local officials can't help federal agents deport people. So how did so many residents end up on ICE's radar through information shared by local police, sheriffs, and prosecutors? I filed 394 FOIA requests to find out. (An @injusticewatch.org partnership with @theintercept.com!)

Illinois promised to protect immigrants. Local officials helped deport them anyway.
In over a third of Illinois counties, cops, sheriffs, and even prosecutors helped federal immigration agents route at least 150 people into the deportation system since Trump returned to office, despi...

Same reason there’s Salvadoran, Vietnamese, and Iraqi neighborhoods: Destabilize a country long enough, its people end up on your doorstop. The U.S. made Colombia its backyard, bankrolling paramilitaries and shielding Chiquita’s death squads. Colombians are here because the United States is there.

It wasn’t just Brazil but also Uruguay and Argentina. After its revolution, Paraguay instituted universal education, banned taxes to the church, and wouldn’t allow whites to marry whites. So Europe backed the triple alliance to kill and destroy. The three had split the land before it even started.

There's obvi a lot more to come on habeas in the courts, and I need to read the article in its entirety, but it seems odd to use a framing (like the top of this article does) that an administration can get rid of it for non-citizens, just like that.

Aura Bogado @aurabogado.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Yes! I do remember that there's been temporary suspension for certain areas, and maybe during insurgencies in general, but my understanding is that its use for non-citizen detainees in particular couldn't just be lifted bc you'd have to get rid of it entirely and you can't given the Constitution (?)

I'm a reporter who's followed habeas cases for non-citizens going back to Obama. Based on what an ICE prosecutor told me in 2013 or so, I've assumed habeas can't be suspended for non-citizens only – you’d have to suspend it for everyone. I'm wrong about stuff all the time. Was I wrong about this?
A screenshot of a New York Times alert reads:

Last year, President Trump weighed suspending habeas corpus rights - a constitutional right - for undocumented immigrants.

Certifications of innocence help wrongfully convicted people expunge their records and get compensation. Cook County’s top prosecutor has frequently opposed issuing them, but a court ruling in May expanded access to them. Our story with Injustice Watch:

You won’t find the Columbus piece online or on Web Archive. Both were removed. But there are remnants if you search. Varela never took accountability for defending Columbus. And he never apologized to me. He thrives in a journalism community that tolerates men like him and quiets women like me.

He zealously defended the piece. And he dragged me. For years. Varela, who self-identifies as white and didn’t disclose the stake his NYC Italian family had in making Columbus a hero, went on to do well for himself writing, for example, how whites need to listen to indigenous peoples. The irony.
