I've spent my life in the southern USA, but my people aren't from around here. Older than the Pope. And, yes, I can drive a stick.

I have been doing entirely too much earnest posting about deep things recently, I need to do a proper thread about hippo testicles or something just to keep myself sane. Oh by the way hippos have migratory testicles.

Absolutely. Like menstrual, fitness, diet apps! People "give data" to an app - or it leaks into databases without their understanding. A ton of hazards, all outside the limited protections for "health information" that's gathered by practitioners and stored in our medical records.

Hard agree. And if the data isn't being handled by a Covered Entity, then HIPAA has no relevance. The laws were written by people who didn't envision what would become possible in the near future. Cross-linking databases - Palantir's trademark - has a ton of dangers that make us all less safe.

Chipotle isn't a Covered Entity under HIPAA. In a sector where people are pressed to work even when they're sick, taking a day is a proxy for "more serious illness." So, just knowing which days more people were out is a marker of a possible outbreak, without any actual medical information needed.

Not necessarily a HIPAA violation. The Wired article also only lists "employee illnesses." That may not touch anything protected by HIPAA. For example, if they're logging data points which kinds of staff, per day, per location ,"take off sick"? That's not Protected Health Information.

Exactly. I get rageful about the sheriffs and preachers and them, who can shrug and wave their clean hands around... Hey, charges got dropped, no foul! The damage just cascades, in ways that don't even make the local paper. We've just gotta do whatever we can to help roll this shit back.

(The condoms at the truck stop were in the men's room, of course. If there was a place in the county an unmarried woman could buy contraceptives, I never heard of it. I counted the girls in my 7th grade yearbook, and in the HS grads - about 1/3 were gone. Not ALL pregnant - but lots were.)

Glad you got out! I'm old - graduated high school before Roe, in a midwest county where the only birth control was condoms from a vending machine at the truck stop. (The drugstore belonged to a good Catholic.) And I still get shocked by shit that I just never thought about.

By the time they're out of detention, some of them need treatment for PTSD, a new job, and maybe help getting their living children back out of the foster care system. Sometimes, help dealing with the people who still harass them because they feel disgusted that "she got off without punishment."

It's relentless. Local sheriffs can do a lot, even if the county prosecutor eventually drops the case. Living in a blood-red state, a person sees more local stories.

I'm guessing that 22 is a lowball figure. "Local Authorities" do stuff. Even when charges are ultimately dropped, a woman can sit in jail for a good while. Lots of those women are not white.

The title and motifs reference the state song and the symbol on the state flag. And, consider: given the wonderful symmetry of the finished work, there have to be MORE RIBBONS somewhere at home that didn't fit this composition!

In happier news: bsky.app/profile/jrho... An "absolutely massive flex" indeed! Nice use of the ribbon rosettes in the center, too. "O Fair New Mexico: 41 Fair Years" is the work of Carol St. Clair Johnson. This quilt earned Best in Category (Miscellaneous Quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

But a DEEPLY WEIRD thing is that *most* of the Americans who are deep into this "crusader" mentality barely know what Catholics *are.* Hegseth, eg, adheres militantly to preacher Doug wilson - a white-nationalist, women-shouldn't-vote Protestant sect. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04...

When a person has acquired a large vocabulary, they can often keep saying many words as they sink deeper into dementia (from whatever cause). Skills for social chit-chat interaction can persist alongside vocabulary for a considerable time after logic and orientation have faded out. Just saying.

ICYMI, from The Tiny Pricks Project. (Several other DP tribute pieces at www.facebook.com/tinyprickspr...)
Color photo of an embroidered piece via the collaborative Tiny Pricks Project. The centered text, which dominates the piece, is clearly embroidered in all caps: "FIND OUT WHO YOU ARE AND DO IT ON PURPOSE" "-Dolly Parton" The square textile is a lady's handkerchief from the mid-20th century. It's white, with a printed border of red and pink roses, interspersed with green rose leaves and white lilies of the valley, drawn in a style one might see on an American Greetings card of that era.
