A huge loss for decent people - and other creatures - everywhere.

A decent human being who wasn’t afraid to address uncomfortable truths. If there were more people like Ehrlich the world would be a better place.

Why are you allowing the use of sweat shop labour to take precedence over the ‘anti-sweat shop labour’ slogans on the tee shirts? Especially since the world is awash with people using sweat shop labour.

I fear what we may be witnessing right now is that private/corporate ownership of the media has now become fundamentally incompatible with democracy.

Finally, one good piece of news from the govt. If they weren’t also complicit in the destruction of UK nature you might start to think they cared.

Really good book. But since generative AI plagiarises work, steals jobs and contributes to climate breakdown, it’s a pass.

We exist as part of a complex set of relationships with the rest of the natural world. The idea that humans can outgrow the life supporting systems of our planet simply because a flawed socioeconomic system requires it is neither ecological or compassionate.

Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 15/12/2025
The natural world is collapsing. Sustainability isn’t rocket science, we should be discussing compassionate and pragmatic ways to co-exist as part of nature. Twisting everything into a culture war or a purity test only obfuscates the sense of broader human solidarity required to address that.
020
Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 15/12/2025
The bad faith in this is that you are intent on distorting this from an issue of sustainability into a question of race. Let’s be clear, I have no more interest in whether the UK population is made up of light skinned Christians or dark skinned Muslims than a water vole does.

Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 15/12/2025
The mental gymnastics required to twist my response into something that it clearly isn’t, comes across as engaging in bad faith. A steady state system is one that exists in balance with nature and is clearly not extinction. I am not denying anyone anything.

We should be aiming towards a steady state system. In which nature, population and consumption are balanced. There isn’t another living creature in the U.K. that would advocate for more people. We need to frame ourselves as part of that larger whole.

Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 15/12/2025
The answer to falling population numbers is not more people - either by increasing birth rates as Musk advocates, or importing more people as you propose. The answer to falling population numbers is changing an economic and sociocultural system predicated on infinite growth.
171
Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 15/12/2025
There is no scenario in which more people - especially in the global north - benefits nature. The argument that we need more people to prop up an unsustainable system feels worryingly close to the one capitalists use to justify the need for an ever expanding consumer base.

Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 15/12/2025
Developing countries are gradually moving towards the heavier environmental footprints of those in the west. You can’t prevent that. However, if women’s reproductive rights increase in line with that hopefully population rates will fall and eventually stabilise in those places.
110
Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 12/12/2025
Yes. Obviously the poorest have much smaller footprints than the wealthiest, but that doesn’t negate the point that there are environmental boundaries to any society. The question is; what are those limits and how do you stay within them from a position of compassion and humanity.
000
Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 12/12/2025
As one of the least biodiverse places in Europe, U.K. nature would clearly benefit from less people - whatever their background. It’s purely our economic and social systems which perpetuate this desire for growth In an ideal world we’d be talking about a steady state. One of balance.

Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 12/12/2025
Answering myself here, but I’m guessing the report ignored wider environmental impact. And that further down the line, as that environmental impact increases in line with the exponential function of GDP growth, you would inevitably see emissions also increase.
000
Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 12/12/2025
Would like to hear scientist’s take on this, as on the face of it, I just don’t buy it. To my knowledge, there’s no scientific evidence that GDP growth can be decoupled from environmental impact. The idea that you can have exponential growth with finite resources is inherently contradictory

I'm seeing claims that progress was made at #COP30, but it really wasn't. Each passing year with no fossil fuel phaseout comes at great opportunity cost as we further burn through the vanishing carbon budget that remains for averting dangerous warming. See my commentary: michaelmann.net/bad-cop/

I’m guessing Reform voters would also argue that their politics isn’t one of division. People don’t tend to see positions as divisive when they agree with them. However, this kind of politics is built on division. It’s zero sum. And this isn’t a game that can be won with that kind of thinking.
110
Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 19/11/2025
Unfortunately, Polanski’s politics also engender division. The idea that we are engaged in a zero sum game where one side wins and the other loses is the problem. There is no solution to the environmental crises we face without a broad sense of solidarity across the political spectrum.

Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 12/11/2025
The main issue that needs reforming is its continued dumbing down. Ideas and individuals, left and right, need to be robustly challenged but there seems to be a growing anti-intellectualism at the BBC that preferences entertainment and engagement over actually informing the audience.

Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 11/11/2025
The problem is also the way in which it has been tribalised by both left and right to fit ideological positions. This should have been a profoundly unifying issue. And yet nearly 40 years after Thatcher’s UN speech, both sides have reframed it as part of an ongoing culture war.
000
Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 10/11/2025
Unfortunately, population, like every other major environmental issue we face, has become tethered to issues of identity, tribalism and ostentatious displays of moral purity. The left and right are equally guilty for differing reasons.

Summer Wolf @augustwolf.bsky.social · 10/11/2025
If you say the problem is the number of people then you’re called a fascist. If you say the problem is the consumption of those people you’re called a communist. The bad faith from all sides on this issue is why we haven’t solved it and most likely why we won’t.

Train people already here to do the jobs and pay them a proper wage. The insanity of growthism on the left and right is part of the reason we’re in this mess.

We needed to halve emissions by 2030, which is not going to happen. We are now at the point in which global leaders need to put on their big boy/girl pants and refuse to acquiesce to this lunatic’s demands. Draw a line in the sand and stand by it.

Or if you want to avoid putting additional pressure on a collapsing ecosystem give women basic reproductive rights and don’t increase the birth rate.
