read this bit about advancement systems and experience in RPGs and really liked it...makes ya think. I've written two RPGs and neither one had XP. (PS: i am starting to HATE this character limit...UGH that's why I had to do this as an image instead of an 8-frickin'-part message...) :\

And what do such advancement systems reflect, be it media, narratives, or the desires of a player? Why do they exist at all? “Hero’s Journey” stories are not nearly as universal as fans of Joseph Campbell would have you believe, and for every “rise-through-the-ranks” tale, you have stories of people who are already at the top of their game being able to use their skills and power (rather than having to learn and accept them). Gaining power through advancement can be a fun process in RPGs, and thereby can offer paths for creativity and decision making, but it is by no means necessary, and it often has detrimental effects on gameplay, especially when it serves merely to create that treadmill in which nothing truly progresses.

Ahh “microspace”…love it. ;) adding to the mental Rolodex. I REALLY loved the Heroica line way back…would’ve loved to have seen it pushed even further because I always thought it would be a fun mini-skirmish game (which is simple with just one page rules etc.) OR a full RPG! ;)
