Interested in AI governance, renaissance music and pallas cats. Can probably still play a selection of Andy Mackay solos on request.

I went last month and it really wasn't bad at all. Easily the least hectic British Museum exhib I've been to. Painless.

Also misogyny and other kinds of hate speech; it's a cesspool. Those institutions maintaining a presence there bear responsibility for keeping it relevant. I don't think it's a defensible position anymore.

Englishness & Britishness have never been fixed concepts. They have been redefined & debated for centuries. Shakespeare did it loads. John of Gaunt’s lament for an imagined glorious past England vs the present crap one from Richard II is like a really well written version of a Tory conference speech
This royal throne of kings, this scepter'd isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,
This nurse, this teeming womb of royal kings,
Fear'd by their breed and famous by their birth,
Renowned for their deeds as far from home,
For Christian service and true chivalry,
As is the sepulchre in stubborn Jewry,
Of the world's ransom, blessed Mary's Son,
This land of such dear souls, this dear dear land,
Dear for her reputation through the world,
Is now leased out, I die pronouncing it,
Like to a tenement or pelting farm:
England, bound in with the triumphant sea
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds:
That England, that was wont to conquer others,
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.
Ah, would the scandal vanish with my life,
How happy then were my ensuing death!

I 100% agree with your argument but "in the book world" is a bit of a generalisation. I used to sell foreign rights for one of the major publishers in that area and *loved* it, as did everyone else in that office. The publisher concerned produced a table outlining all the different microgenres (1/2)

The idea that readers of romance novels aren't discerning is also pretty offensive. Genre fiction moves on in weird and wonderful ways thanks to human ingenuity and imagination.

Note that none of this requires “godlike AI” to be posited, merely the capabilities we know exist today. Which was what I responded to you with originally!

Naomi Colvin @auerfeld.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Not quite. Try: purposeful (unlikely, law enforcement matter), negligent on basic security (up to about 2024 absolutely yes), struggling to assess, contain new capabilities (absolutely yes), struggling to reconcile heightened security requirements with commercial imperatives (absolutely yes).

Inspect is the engine for conducting evals, not the substantive tests themselves. AISI (and p much everyone else) have articulated their concerns that LLM development is outpacing the ability to formulate meaningful tests. Just take a look at their reports on Mythos et al.

OpenAI have been pretty half-hearted with reporting - that's why we're continuing to hear about new incidents. Are you really claiming that the labs want to conduct unauthorised intrusion into government systems? Liability for agent actions & copyright etc qs re training data are separate issues

Naomi Colvin @auerfeld.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Sanctions on settlements is a concrete step, not without opposition and creating a significant international demonstration effect. Of course more needs to be done.
110
Naomi Colvin @auerfeld.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The intention to continue advancing the tech is certainly human but I think it's a stretch to claim that OpenAI wants the tech it is developing to intrude into Australian government systems. Legal liability for these kinds of events is another matter and I'm inclined to think the labs should be.
100
Naomi Colvin @auerfeld.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I'm not clear what you mean by "harness" but if you mean a secure testing and development environment that's what everyone is wrestling with at the moment.
200
Naomi Colvin @auerfeld.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Expert opinion (take AISI if you want to disregard the labs) doesn't agree with you. Note that "this behaviour is clearly problematic" is not the same thing as "this model is broadly safe."
200
Naomi Colvin @auerfeld.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It’s really not. Inscrutability in this context is anxiety about whether the output of probablistic models can be audited or limited. That’s even more acute when model implementations can “do stuff” & have access to the open internet. Not the same situ with standard compiled apps.

You never need the maximalist versions of these scenarios though: Claude is already generating the majority of code for Anthropic's new models, which will presumably become ever less explicable by human beings. Agents running amok is loss of control by any interpretation.

It may be tempting to see value in projects such as the Schmidt Foundation — that’s Eric Schmidt of Google — funding a fellowship in AI at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the Musk Foundation’s support of the Scroll Prize to use AI in reconstructing ancient texts in the burnt scrolls of Herculaneum. But these projects are simply two among countless others that have been seeding AI into museums and historical research for well over a decade. Even more egregious is the case of AI companies buying and destroying rare books en masse in the process of scanning them for data. In the context of the dire austerity we are witnessing, the juggernaut of tech money seems impossible to resist.

I think purely bc advancement in capabilities to date has moved forward exponentially with the quantity of training material used. & potential legal risk is seen as containable, esp if deals are done / partnerships made with the most plausible major litigants.
