Yesterday was pub day for my novel SIXTY PERCENT CHANCE OF RAIN 🥳, which has been described as a "wonderful late-summer read." Bookshop.org: bookshop.org/book/9798997... Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B0HC38XQ8M/ More kind words from strangers on Goodreads: www.goodreads.com/book/show/25... Enjoy!
Just published! Sixty Percent of Rain by Audrey Beth Stein. Paperback + Ebook. Ebook in Kindle Unlimited + available for library purchase.

Image shows the book cover with trope-style arrows and phrases: "queer joy," "middle age," "one weekend of camping," "female friendship," "s'mores," and an asterisked note, "No sex. (It's not that kind of book.)"

I was recently interviewed by I Heart SapphFic about Becoming Emily Novak and my writing practice. Lots of thoughtful questions that had me reflecting all the way back to high school. You can read the interview here: iheartsapphfic.com/2026/05/25/a... Heart art by Beelaa via VectorStock.com

Hey! Apparently I shared your cover reveal a couple of years ago, but I hadn't actually read the book until today. So good. So sweet and affirming. Thank you for making it :) Hope it's found lots of readers.

Reading DRAGON CAT WINS THE LOTTERY... to an otter. Best birthday present ever :) For the record, having a couple of otters on your lap is like having a half dozen kittens on your lap. This photo is a few months old, but remembering still brings me joy.

You told your Hollywood crush you want to sleep with her. Your neighbor’s asking for coming out advice before she declares her presidential run. Your son’s wondering about his dead dad. And this is just September. 17 more months of the unexpected to come. #DVpit #A #CON #LF #WF #JV #LGBT

Turns out short-form posts are not where my brain's at, for either writing or reading. As we used to say in middle school, it's been real. I'm taking an indefinite break here. You can find me on my website audreybethstein.com or Instagram @audreybethstein, where I post beautiful images + book news.

It works for me... I once moved six times in a year and a half, and I learned the value of enjoying something and then passing it on—or returning it to the library :)

This was really interesting... thanks for sharing! I'm curious *why* it would be easier for the publisher to change black text than white text to another language. I'm guessing this is something that is specific to the offset printing process, and another color like purple would also be a challenge?

At this point, it's closer to moving van Tetris than anything else. I have one small 4-shelf built-in, so the space is at a premium and not much new gets kept.

My Facebook feed today is filled with obituaries for people who should still be alive. There was a photo of a family of five, happy and full of life, then a photo of their five coffins next to each other. Fuck Hamas.

Got my Covid vax today. Filling out racial and ethnic information was a *requirement* to get the appointment. That sort of form scares the shit out of me, every time. I don't have the courage of my Uncle Morty, WWII POW who didn't hesitate to say he was a Jew, then survived a concentration camp.

My actual collection is small, but I sometimes spend more time choosing fonts than delving into my PB characters' backstories. And I'm partial to Andika for PB text—for its combination of simple-yet-distinct beauty, reading accessibility, and licensing. #kidlitchat

Hi #kidlitchat! I'm curious if your character development process is different for picture book texts vs longer written work (e.g. middle grade).

The existence or lack thereof doesn't make a difference to me, as far as I can tell. But if I get creepy vibes about a person from their author photo, I might not want to spend time inside their mind (and thus would probably skip the book).

Nice! Clear expectations and limits up front. How much time do you typically allow for a review pass? One of my first surprises when hiring freelancers (illustrators, in my case) was how much time it took on my end to review their work and make clear and appropriate change requests.

Was in an indie bookstore on a meet-date, so I wanted to buy *something*. Then I saw EVERYTHING POSSIBLE — a song I'd loved for a long time, picturebookified (that's a word, right?) with updated lyrics, beautiful illustrations, and a QR code to hear it performed.

I usually fold the page without a second thought, unless there's something else handy nearby. I guess I'd rather breathe the oxygen from a tree than have it made into a bookmark. But I do print out library receipts (to see when the book is due), and I'll use those until they fall out — then dog ear.

I've been seeing many more folks mentioning picture books in their intros lately. Although I doubt we'd win a tug-of-war with all the fantasy writers.
