"Tales of Fists and Fireballs" from Aaron David Harris is yet another podcast who owes their existence to anime, and animation in general. An interesting source of inspiration, but not that uncommon. From original shows like "Project Gnosis" to adaptations of actual anime (e.g. "Attack on Space"), all the way to shows taking a page from classic anime like "Sailor Moon" ("Genesis Avalon")—anime and audio drama share a history together.

A five-part thriller taking place in a rural setting and sharing a similar ominous tone to "From Within: A Tale of the Macabre." While one uses epistolary prose as its primary mode of storytelling, "Land's End: A Shepherd's Tale" is more cinematic in its execution; an unexpected and interesting audio aesthetic for a story with a shepherd as a main character.

While not a sequel to "Untold Virginia," the fiction podcast "The Hexings," takes the idea of an audio drama dressed up as dramatized non-fiction and run with it until their path's split. It's a spiritual successor with a separate creative team behind each podcast probably having no idea of the other's existence. Even when the specific paths are unique after a certain point, they both wind up in the same place by the end.

From the creators of "Flight of the Bucket" comes their next venture into podcast fiction, "From Within." The premise of this seven-part audio drama may sound like the start of a bad joke, but its characters are well-rounded have enough personal drama to fill a small high school auditorium. "Moose on a Highway" is a modern road trip comedy where a grounded plane prevents seven people from reaching their destination. Each one has a different motive, but ultimately all want to get to Connecticut.

The 1954 radio drama broadcast from the BBC of Dylan Thomas' "Under Milk Wood" is available on most platforms like public libraries and audible. The original broadcast and one from LA Theatre Works recorded later being the two main versions of this radio play.

The 13-part audio drama called "Derry's New Direction" shares a lot in common with "Parasite" directed by Bong Joon-ho and "The Hunger Games" franchise from Suzanne Collins. The common denominator between all three is the exploration of social class through a Marxist lens.

Announced on May 8 and released June 24, "All-Star Superman" originally released as a 12-issue comic book run. Now, 10 years later and in time for James Gunn's new Superman movie, Penguin Random House and DC comics have adapted one of the most influential Superman stories into an audio drama.

Another story from the anthology series, Secret Handshake Productions. This five-part look into the character of Modred from Arthurian lore does something the prequel era of Star Wars failed to do and does a fall from grace story right the first time.

Opening musical numbers can set the stage tonally (e.g. the song "Alexander Hamilton" from "Hamilton") and literally through the occasional line of dialogue thrown into break up the song (e.g. "No One Mourns the Wicked" from "Wicked"). "Hearthbound" does the same thing, but what it sets up isn't what one anticipates listening to future episodes. For me, the first episode implies a musical with an emphasis on the music.

A product of 90s children's television in the UK, the "Treacle People" weren't a household name outside of England, Scotland and Wales. While arguably not as popular as the Muppets or other Jim Henson properties, the method of creating an episode was a dying mode of animation. Now, roughly 30 years later, the "Treacle People" are once again playing with the old and making it fresh.

"In Media Res" by the Good Story Guild is a story where you think you know the ending. Everything up until that last episode is more or less what you expect. Told in five acts — with some complimentary material in the form of original music (Plus a coda at the end) — for a total of 10 episodes), "In Media Res" is a tale of friendship, connections and the differences between the two in Hollywood.

Perhaps the most famous comic book writer who has crossed ponds and worked with Marvel and DC Comics, Frank Miller's take on Daredevil's origin shares many similarities with "Batman: Year One." "The Man Without Fear" came out after Miller redefined the Batman's origin story, the time between when he put on the cowl and watched his parents get gunned down in crime alley.

When fellow podcast critic and friend brought a show to my attention, something in my brain flickered. A memory, not too distant, but not recent either, coming to the forefront. It's called the Comic Sans podcast and it's a venture between Andas Productions and Realm. The format is two people talking about comic books. One is an expert; the other is new.

Unlike the first three entries in the series, the book publication date for "Rhythm of War" and its Graphic Audio adaptation released at roughly the same. Some people think the fourth book is the weakest of the four, and to some book four is the weakest out of the first four books in the Stormlight Archive. Adding a rushed final product, resulting in audio stutters and word skipping makes for a less than ideal experience.
