Look at the size of that tilapia! This fish is a key research and educational species here at SFAAS and their importance goes well beyond our facilities and are vital for research around breeding, genetic studies, water quality optimization, and disease control.

🚨 New paper led by grad student Alex Ginez! So many native fishes are still labeled as “rough fish” and given no management attention, and often unlimited harvest - still! But are these fishes actually capable of sustaining high harvest? academic.oup.com/fisheries/ad... A thread on the study 🧵👇

Have you ever been curious about the impact that freshwater mussels have on our water and ultimately our ecosystem? This picture shows that they aren't just nice to have, but critical to every other organism that depends on clean, filtered water.

What many don’t know is that some hybrid catfish are growing too large too fast, which cuts into local farm profits. How? Oversized fish eat feed, prey on smaller fish, and are worth significantly less at processing.

SFAAS' Dr. Andrew Rypel's comments here are a reminder that aquatic systems demand nuance. Decisions about hybridization and nonnative fish populations can affect ecosystem health, native species, and long-term outcomes. That's why SFAAS work matters. www.vox.com/climate/4831...

These animals can cause big trouble. Why are states unleashing them by the millions?
Introduced species can wreak havoc on native ecosystems. Many states are flooding their waterways with them.
