This is the best book I have read in years. Hard #'s for what we know but don't develop policy to --> proxy war is the most persistent/prominent form of international conflict. FID/SFA are essential tools of statecraft

In the day-to-day grind working with a team, dealing with inevitable challenges, its easy to lose sight of the wins Today I checked into the IWI site and saw a snapshot of the incredible content the team has created over the past week and a half. Amazing!

Forthcoming publication by David Logan and I shows indirect conflicts (aka proxy wars) have increased significantly since 2000, while MIDs (low intensity direct conflicts) have remained relatively constant. Great power competition == proxy warfare

Huge career announcement! I have decided to leave the active duty Army and begin a civilian career - my final day of active service will be in June 2026. I plan to pursue opportunities in the private sector while continuing my service in the Army Reserves.

Pretty cool to receive in the mail. If you don't speak Latin, the text roughly translates to: "I spent six years stressed out of my mind, and all I got in return was this piece of paper"

Machiavelli wrote “once the populace has taken up arms, there will always be a foreign power eager to come to its aid” Proxy warfare & SFA 4-eva! Almost like it is a common tool of statecraft.

Remember when Ken Waltz endorsed this craziness? “The slow spread of nuclear weapons [which] gives states time to learn to live with them, to appreciate their virtues, and to understand the limits they place on behaviour”

2011 was the second-most violent year for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. 562 American soldiers were killed and another 5,227 were wounded The lessons from Afghanistan were paid for in blood. We need to capture them.

TE Lawrence rings true as ever "Do not try to do too much with your own hands. Better the Arabs do it tolerably than that you do it perfectly. It is their war, you are… not to win it for them… your practical work will not be as good as you think it is."

There is an assumption that some military units are better at advising & SFA than others (SF, Marines, Brits). My research finds units are helpful, but insufficient to explaining advisor success All advisors need constraints on temptation to conduct unilateral kinetic operations

Irregular warfare is an key tool of statecraft But a tool borne of weakness. Used when you face material/political constraints to decisive action (or as a shaping effort to conventional force) Iran's regional strategy of working through proxies was clever, but borne of weakness
