But staying with a nautical theme, the longer the war goes on, the more it risks breaking the Navy.
Another way time doesn't favor the U.S. here has to do with naval power. FOREVER WARS (via American Prestige) told you in March that naval sustainment was a huge challenge for a war primarily occurring in the sea and (ship-launched) air domains. Now family members of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln are reporting food shortages and maintenance-related deteriorations aboard a carrier that's spent an astonishing 250 days without a port call on a combat deployment. To sustain the blockade necessary to bring Iran to an as-yet-unknown threshold of economic pain sufficient to them giving up their leverage against the U.S., the U.S. needs persistent naval power at a scale it hasn't summoned in generations. "I know there's Army guys that are like, look, I slept in a hole that was muddy underneath the tank and I ate MREs. But you didn’t do that for nine straight months," the father of a Lincoln sailor told NBC. The Iraq War came extremely close to breaking the Army through the strain of relentless deployment. (Some argue that it succeeded.) The Iran War threatens to break the Navy. It is much harder to rebuild a Navy than to rebuild an Army.

Tisch herself has cooperated proactively with ICE to cage Leqaa Kordia for nothing more than her advocacy for Palestine. As I wrote in my November piece, if ICE seeks NYPD cooperation on something it claims is a criminal matter, that is one of many end-runs around sanctuary laws—as Kordia learned—available to it.

But on another, more human level, noncooperation can hardly be sufficient against a lawless, violent deportations force empowered by the Supreme Court to racially profile. I do not for a second have any illusion that the NYPD would actually protect Haitians or any other New Yorker from its cousins in ICE—certainly not without aggressively and thoroughly enforced orders, and likely not even then. But I ask you to consider how it will look when ICE forces a screaming mother to the ground while nearby cops continue playing Candy Crush. Then consider how it will sound when elected officials, including the mayor, say there was nothing that the NYPD could have done while she screamed, because there's federalism and legal procedure to consider.

PAUL WESTERBERG: I’m in love/ with Francesca Hong www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
Hong is campaigning on “permanent affordability” and a new way of running the state. She wants to more than double the income tax on millionaires and many businesses, provide free school lunches to all students, subsidize child care, set the minimum wage at $20 an hour, ban police officers from cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in many cases, establish a public bank and public grocery stores, put a one-year freeze on building data centers, protect doctors who provide gender transition care, expand union rights, legalize marijuana, and end the state’s school voucher program.
“I will not weakly accept the sellout of Wisconsin to trillionaires, billionaires and big tech,” she told attendees at the Democratic Party’s state convention last month.

Mark Esper calls “Lebanon” the spoiler in Iran negotiations — Lebanon, not Israel, the country currently bombing, marauding and occupying Lebanon, killing thousands and displacing a million people. And the Meet the Press guy doesn’t correct him.
GARRETT HAAKE: Do you think the administration is too trusting of the Iranians by structuring the deal in that way?

FORMER DEFENSE SECRETARY MARK ESPER: Well, I don't believe so. You know, you look at many of the players on the team, they're experienced in foreign policy for some time. I don't think they trust the Iranians. Nobody trusts the Iranians. I think they put a deal on the table. I think as the Vice President said, "Let's give it a shot and see if it works," and in that regard I'd say, "Yeah, there's a lot more of this football game to play out." We're maybe only in the second or third quarter. We have to get through, you know, the opening negotiations today. Lebanon will continue to be a spoiler and threaten any talks. But at the end of the day I think this will ultimately be scored on two things: What is the deal we get with the Iranians with regard to the nuclear framework, the nuclear aspects of this deal, and secondly, does the Strait of Hormuz return to the status quo ante? And I think those are two major questions right now that sit before us. And in fact on the second item I'm concerned about language in the MOU that suggests that maybe after the 60 days Iran would retain some type of ability to impose--

GARRETT HAAKE: Yeah.

FORMER DEFENSE SECRETARY MARK ESPER: --fees on shippers.

All this has been so obscured and so normalized as to no longer register as what it is: institutional lawlessness from U.S. intelligence, not only tolerated but encouraged by members of Congress. Ever since Congress in 2008 retroactively blessed STELLAR WIND by creating Section 702, we have been told by advocates of bulk surveillance that if the duly elected representatives of the people (no matter how many of them represent their donors rather than their voters, let alone their constituents) object to mass surveillance, they can simply let 702 expire. Cotton and Grassley are showing the cynicism of that assurance. There is no democratic culture within the Security State, with the exception of the military culture of abiding by civilian control, and we are (at the very least) on the precipice of artificial-intelligence-enabled surveillance. Letting 702 survive after expiration will be the latest milestone on a road to ruin, a journey where the American people do not control their surveillance apparatus—an apparatus used, with increasing frequency, against them.

A taste:
Until now, Netanyahu has reserved his overt defiance for American leaders he wishes to humiliate and marginalize, like Barack Obama and Joe Biden, in order to promote alternatives like Trump, whom he expects will provide him greater freedom of action. Entirely unsurprisingly—unless you're Trump—Netanyahu will not tolerate inhibitions on that freedom of action. Trump loves to tell the tale of the scorpion stinging the frog who takes him across the river, to celebrate taking advantage of suckers, which he holds to be a virtue. Now Trump is the frog. How's that venom taste?

So you’re saying there’s a chance to force Vance to destroy his career by casting the tie breaking vote to continue the Iran War?
Washington Post after the House passed the War Powers Resolution for Iran today: “To reach Trump’s desk, the Senate resolution would require a final vote in the chamber, which could be tough if every senator is voting. Three Republican senators who have opposed similar resolutions in the past missed the procedural vote on the Senate resolution last month, allowing it to advance. If they had voted the way they have in the past, it would have failed 50-50.”

But Cooper's bullshit about a "range of contingencies" obscures the central issue of what opening the Strait will require and what their prospects of success are. Executing those contingencies will exchange large quantities of blood for little chance of success. Navy ships carrying hundreds if not thousands of sailors will come in range of Iran's considerable remaining missile and drone arsenals. Are the American public and the global insurance markets ready to see a nearly $1 billion destroyer burning, listing and sinking in a narrow waterway halfway around the world? Will they be prepared for Marines to attempt an amphibious landing to take Iranian territory away from missile batteries (which are mobile, per U.S. intelligence, so that's going to be a wide-ranging operation) and then having to hold that territory while resupplying its invading force? Winston Churchill also had a wide range of contingencies to take Gallipoli.

"Iranian state television airs Guard putting anti-Trump messages on missiles"
By JON GAMBRELL, Associated Press

Iranian state television aired video Thursday showing members of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard putting messages denouncing Trump on missiles they prepared to launch.

One of the messages read, in part: “Thank you to all those who, even in America itself, condemn the war wage by the CRIMINAL GANG IN THE WHITE HOUSE.”

Lmao someone tell the Middle East Forum about the $1 trillion Pentagon budget
Massive investment: Iran has poured billions into these subterranean missile networks, prioritizing military might over its people’s welfare.
A single missile city costs billions, indicting a regime that sacrifices citizen well-being for power.
Economic paradox: Despite vast oil wealth, Iran’s economy suffers as funds funnel into military ambitions, leaving citizens in poverty.
Tehran’s covert investments betray its propaganda, exposing the regime’s true priorities over national prosperity.

I’ll have more to say about this piece later this morning in my newsletter (forever-wars.com).
Sometimes less experienced volunteers would express alarm over the absence of critical supplies. Ahmed would take them aside and tell them they risked embarrassing the Palestinian doctors, who have experienced unimaginable trauma to treat their patients. Many of them are junior residents who must make agonizing choices in rationing care. “In Gaza, a lot of the senior doctors are gone,” Ahmed says. “Either they evacuated, or they were imprisoned, or they were killed.”

THOSE DOCTORS HAUNT the hallways of Al-Shifa.

The chaos levels of the hospital are lower than when the bombs fell nonstop. Ahmed had time for tea, coffee, and conversation. She learned that spare time was dangerous in its own way. “That’s when the emotional chaos happens,” Ahmed explains. “That’s when you have time to think about what you’ve experienced.”

Spencer Ackerman @attackerman.bsky.social · 27/03/2026
Gauze was supposed to be abundant. But seven foreign doctors and aid workers who volunteered in Gaza, including four who were there after the ceasefire was meant to have taken effect, described a perverse situation in which Israel permits doctors into Gaza but not medical equipment, prompting several to smuggle vital implements of care into their personal belongings. And the reality since October is that Gaza’s remaining doctors must deal with both an influx of patients needing routine treatment and a continuing, if reduced, pace of casualties from the IDF, and do it all without crucial supplies. Doctors told WIRED the public-health crisis they witnessed looked to them more like a new phase of the genocide than its aftermath. During this phase, the Israelis no longer need to open fire to kill Palestinians, though they still do that, too.

What you’ve seen on your phone cannot prepare you for the nightmarish reality.
No matter how often an algorithm showed you the ruins of Gaza, “nothing can prepare you for entering into a landscape like that,” says Elise Thorburn, a Canadian ER doctor who arrived two weeks into the supposed ceasefire. What she saw as she took the coastal al-Rashid Road north did not “resemble a human habitat in any way.” Silence from the collapsed buildings and shattered roads gave way to masses of displaced people living in plastic tents or the remains of structurally unsound buildings. “Not one building,” Thorburn says, “is unaffected.” Concrete dust, suspended in the air from the estimated 68 million tons of debris, makes it feel “hazy all the time,” she adds.

Ahmed paid attention with alarm to what Gazans breathe in. Her experience treating patients with COPD from the World Trade Center leads her to forecast that the effects of the genocide will remain in the lungs of its survivors for decades.

Looks like the NSA is pointing at American VPN users and saying “we are so confused, we can’t tell if this internet usage comes from within the United States, better collect to make sure.” Abolish Section 702… From a letter to Tulsi Gabbard from Wyden, Padilla, Markey, Warren, Jacobs & Jayapal:
Although VPNs are often recommended by Federal agencies and advertised as a way to protect a user’s privacy, using a VPN may seriously impact an American’s rights, the members wrote. The U.S. government’s rules for surveillance under Section 702 of FISA and under Executive Order 12333 specify that when the country a user is in is unknown, the government may assume that user is a foreigner. Because foreigners outside of the United States don’t have Fourth Amendment rights, VPNs that hide the country in which a user is located could impact an American’s privacy rights.

“[Americans should] be told if these VPN services, which are advertised as a privacy protection, including by elements of the federal government, could, in fact, negatively impact their rights against U.S. government surveillance,” the members wrote. “To that end, we urge you to be more transparent with the American public about whether the use of VPNs can impact their privacy with regard to U.S. government surveillance, and clarify what, if anything, American consumers can do to ensure they receive the privacy protections they are entitled to under the law and Constitution.”

The United States of America lost one war to Iran, via proxies. That was the 2003-2011 occupation of Iraq. Now it has lost a war to Iran in the open field. Let that sink in. Do these losses feel like humiliation? If so, that's residual American Exceptionalism nesting within your soul. After all, what about the U.S. experience in the Middle East for the last 25 years has given you reason to think that the U.S. would have prevailed in destroying the Islamic Republic of Iran? Doesn't that history, when examined outside the funhouse of American Exception, instead tell an alternative story of the U.S. launching wars it doesn't understand how to win? Especially since this war is on Iranian soil, launched by the Islamic Republic's principal adversaries, with the stakes existential for the regime?

I am not saying there should be a better, more competent unprovoked aggression against Iran. The war is unjustifiable, even were it winnable, which it does not look to be. I am saying that the Trump people were unwilling to do the basic work of preparing for the foreseeable consequences of their actions, work typically performed by belligerents who know how to, like, win. I am saying that not only is their agenda loathsome, they do not know ball.

Such as
After the kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro, and now in the strangulation of Cuba and the seemingly imminent move against Teheran, the far-right imagination is running wild. Rubio's speech is in one sense full of euphemism, leaving unsaid just what the implications are of an unapologetic U.S.-European hegemony, but in another sense it's obvious for those who are willing to look Rubio's agenda in the face. The Europeans should join MAGA in "not maintain[ing] the polite pretense that our way of life is just one among many," but rather insisting that it is superior, and ought to command the lower orders of the world. I doubt this man, this man who would tell foreign-policy elites in Munich that they belong to a heritage of superior beings, uses a bidet.
