I'm not fluent in Japanese, so I'll speak broadly and encourage anyone who's unsure to look into it rather than taking the word of social media users: It appears some of the translation was incorrect or open to interpretation, which dopes are using as an excuse to dismiss mostly accurate reporting.

I wasn't scared, but only because I was too busy asking questions about spinning wheels. What are they? Are they real? Are they really that dangerous? How do they work? Do we have a spinning wheel? Oh, would you look at that? The beauty is sleeping. Wow, who could have seen that coming?

Yikes! More than half my life. Retronauts is the podcast that convinced me there was something to this whole podcast thing. It got me through some tough times, set me on the road to creating my own shows, and introduced me to good friends. I'm not sure how I would have survived college without it.

Are generations useful as reference points? And if so, how useful are they? I'll grant that they're useful for division and marketing, but do sweeping assessments about the characteristics and experiences of everyone born within a fuzzy time frame actually serve most of us?

• A better and more varied selection of horror movies than any of my paid streaming services. • The worst video playback technology on the modern Internet. In conclusion, Tubi is a land of contrasts. Thank you.

There's never a good time to learn artists you love and admire are getting destroyed by boneheaded corporate mistakes (or worse, their own stupidity), but maaaaaan, I just started playing Resident Evil Village for the first time two days ago. How do you go from THAT to THIS?

A.I.'s less like a microwave; more like a cardboard appliance from an IKEA display. That was fished out of a sewer. But still requires electricity. No, more than that. Water, too. And it displaces people. Eliminates jobs and healthcare. Steals. Kills. Why would you bake with anything else?

Not to disparage microwaves. They're not a suitable replacement for the ovens and stoves used to prepare the food that enable fancy restaurants to remain operational, but they do reliably serve a real purpose with speed and efficiency.

Imagine a five-star restaurant dumping their oven by the curb because microwaves are faster; replacing their pricey herbs and spices with whatever contributions from the community they swept up at the end of the night.

Speaking at Friday’s conference (reported by GameBiz), programmer Satoshi Ishida detailed some of the improvements coming to RE Engine as part of Capcom’s ‘REX’ initiative.

Ishida explained that ‘REX’ was launched to overcome modern challenges that make triple-A games take so long to develop, including improving performance, tools, development efficiency, QA, and other aspects.

Among the various advancements detailed in the presentation was a commitment to evolve RE Engine into what Ishida called an ‘AI game engine.’Highlighted text:

Sounds like they're letting everyone leave. I'm under the impression that there was a news crew on the scene, but I can't find a word about the situation anywhere. (Of course, I'm not using specific language, so it's not like these posts would turn up in a search, either.)

I'm light on details, but I just heard from a family member who's trapped at work because someone pulled a gun. I think the danger has passed without anyone getting hurt. Regardless, my stance now is the same as my stance was before I heard about any of this: Repeal the second amendment already!

Oh, no! More horror movies! It's October, and that means it's time for my annual attempt to watch, rank, and maybe write a bit about a minimum of one seasonally appropriate movie each day for a month ...

The rare Nextdoor post that wasn't generated by a machine. Can't wait to purchase a shirt featuring this cartoonist's original character!
"I’m selling t-shirts with my original cartoons on them. Currently I have 5 character designs (shown below) with more to come. Sizes range from S to XXL. Each shirt costs $20 usually but I’m selling them for $15 each until October 5. It’s an extra $3 for local delivery. Text me at [phone number redacted] if you’d like to order one. Or even a few."

The worst drawing of Super Mario's friend Yoshi, but instead of being green and white, he's magenta and yellow, which is very original, I guess.

I loved Letterman's show, but even at a very young age, lacking the language and role models to understand how bad it was, the way he compulsively remarked on every woman's appearance made me uncomfortable. I have no idea if Craig was better, or if I'd just grown numb to leering hosts by then.

I kinda know what you mean about overly flirtatious Ferguson. I don't recall it being "with everyone," but I also haven't seen much since the show was on the air. Am I going to be horrified if I watch old clips? I just remember liking that he seemed to disregard his notes and really TALK to guests.

The first three names that came to mind: Craig Ferguson, Seth Meyers, and Conan O'Brien. I can't find any examples of children promoting movies on their shows, which I'm taking as evidence that they (or at least their production teams) have better instincts than Letterman.

Insomnia was a key symptom that led to my narcolepsy diagnosis. Maybe everyone has narcolepsy? (Okay, probably not, but that first sentence isn't a joke. Many sleep disorders are wildly misunderstood and under-diagnosed, so if you have real questions, please don't hesitate to see a sleep doctor.)

I like that you used the word "glass," because yes, for sure, what assurance do you have that someone thought ahead and designed the robot to pour hot coffee in a heat-resistant mug, or to differentiate coffee from any other substance that might be in the coffee's expected location?

A Castlevania thought: To my knowledge, horror iconography has been pervasive throughout every game in the 40-year history of this series, including the spin-offs and I think even the cameo appearances. Is there ever any actual horror? A moment that invokes dread? A jump scare? ANY heebie-jeebies?

Camp Crystal Jake Spencer @atsymboljake.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I rarely use a cellular telephone or tablet computer, but I tried a few minutes of that free, 40th Anniversary port of Castlevania, my first experience playing an NES game—or any traditional, button-based action game—on a capacitive touch screen. This is a prank, right? Why would anyone do this?
Official screenshot of Castlevania: 40th Anniversary, found on the Google Play store. The game takes up maybe one-third of the total screen space, surrounded by big, ugly, virtual buttons. I'd describe their appearance as utilitarian, but the directions on the fake bad are so poorly spaced that I could barely take a step without accidentally ducking. The "MANUAL" and "TITLE" buttons are bigger, farther apart, more conveniently placed, and more visually prominent than the "START" and "SELECT" buttons, which are clearly intended to evoke the layout of an NES controller, but not only are they far off from those physical buttons, the NES controller was never meant to have a game screen jutting out from the top of it. This is how Konami is celebrating one of the most enduring series in all of video games? Even if it were some cobbled-together, pirated fan project, in what world is this an acceptable way to play an NES game? What are we doing? Dracula did not die, rise from his grave, and die again so you could rub your thumbs against a flat surface that somehow makes less sense than a Triax Turbo Touch 360. You deserve better!

One rogue individual was kind once, in the history of our species, and we all immediately condemned him. We even let a war criminal name the incident. We taught all future generations that it was the worst thing that ever happened in the history of the universe. Why would we try kindness again?

I have some concerns of my own, but what's your solution? Every single day, China has the opportunity to leave more wolves in more playgrounds. We can either keep up or...I don't know, not feed kids to wolves? How would that even work? You need to accept that playground wolves are inevitable.

I thought we'd already agreed to a very reasonable trade-off: Selling ad space in a video game is a commitment. Advertisements shall remain an indelible part of the game, even decades after the products they're selling have been taken off the market.

The one thing that sends me into a rage is the writing on the monster-introduction cutscenes. It's cute that each big bad gets a dramatic poem, and I appreciate that translation and scansion are difficult enough on their own, and exponentially harder together, but could nobody count syllables??

I don't DISLIKE it. No one's making me continue. I suppose the way Capcom treats this as one of their most exciting and valuable series, and the things I'd heard about Rise, in particular, didn't prepare me for what's been a good, but unremarkable, way to pass the time. It's just nothing special.

Notably, I haven't touched multiplayer, and I doubt I ever will, so maybe it's on me for not picking a complementary role and playing the game the intended way, but there are still many, many hours of single player quests available. I have to assume they meant for players to play them.
