Glaciers Without Borders climatewithoutborders.substack.com/p/glaciers-without-borders "High Mountain Asia, which overlaps with seven out of the ten countries in the HKKH, is home to the world’s largest reservoir of perennial glaciers and snow outside of the Earth’s polar ice sheets."
The Hindu Kush Karakoram Himalayan (HKKH) system spans across Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar. Each country builds militarised infrastructure, massive damming projects, and mega hydro-electric powerplants in the name and sake of development and progress.

 Milarepa on Mount Kailash
c. 1500

Milarepa (1040–1123) was a beloved Tibetan singer poet, mystic, teacher, and Buddhist saint. In this thangka, a painted cloth that can be rolled up for portability, Milarepa sits in a cave on Mount Kailash, which is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus. In front of him, Lake Manasarovar flows by in wavy blue and green bands. Milarepa is flanked by his disciples, and his teacher, Marpa, appears in a medallion above him. Dazzling snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas frame each of the central figures, and below them multicolored foothills appear as prismatic spikes refracting the sun’s rays like jewels. The Five Sisters of Long Life appear along the perimeter of the thangka; devoted to Milarepa, these mountain goddesses are fierce protectors of Buddhism. ...

In his song Milarepa refers to the palace of Demchog, the principal Buddhist deity of the sacred mountain. Of awesome appearance, blue like the sky, draped in garlands of skulls and embracing his female consort, Demchog, the “One of the Supreme Bliss,” dances in the ecstatic realization of the ultimate reality on the summit of Kailas. An important tutelary deity of Tibetan Buddhism, he guides practitioners of meditation along the short and dangerous path leading to enlightenment in this life.

"... Based on the Landsat imagery of 2020, the study has mapped 63,761 glaciers across the HKH region, covering an area of 55,782.02 square kilometer (km²) and containing approximately 5,735.79 cubic kilometer (km³) of estimated ice reserves." lib.icimod.org/records/z2xk...

Report
Changing dynamics of glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region from 1990 to 2020
Creators

    Maharjan, Sudan Bikash
    Sherpa, Tenzing Chogyal

Description

"This report presents a comprehensive, multidecadal assessment of glacier change across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) from 1990 to 2020, revealing a 12% reduction in glacier area alongside a significant decline in ice reserves as climate change accelerates glacier retreat across the region. Combining high-quality satellite data and robust analysis, it highlights strong regional variations, with particularly rapid losses in the eastern and central HKH, and underscores the critical role glaciers play in sustaining water resources, regulating river flows, and influencing disaster risks. By linking glacier dynamics to water security, climate adaptation, and transboundary challenges, the report provides an essential evidence base for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working to address the growing impacts of climate change in one of the world’s most vulnerable mountain systems."

Askik asked advice. The porcupine said, “We need to help you. We need to call a weasel in to bite the Windigo’s heart.” The porcupine rattled. Soon the weasel arrived. The porcupines said. “Askik needs your help. See, over there, that’s him, shivering without birds.”

The weasel said, “First you need to conjure a storm to swirl around the Windigo, to confuse it.” The porcupines conjured together. A great storm started up. When the Windigo arrived to eat Askik it got swirled. The porcupine storm confused the Windigo. It howled out … its mouth opened.
With that, the weasel climbed into the Windigo’s throat toward its ice heart. Then the weasel chewed the Windigo’s heart! Inside the Windigo the weasel chewed. Soon the Windigo was dead. When the weasel crawled out, Askik quickly built a fire to thaw the weasel’s chattering teeth.
The fire was also used to melt the Windigo’s heart. Everyone was still shivering. Porcupines and the weasel and Askik, some from fear and some from chewing ice. But sitting by the fire would stop the shivering soon.

The Hindu Kush Himalaya "Protecting the HKH requires more regional cooperation, more consistent and synchronised data sources, more sharing of innovative solutions, and more global attention." www.icimod.org/who-we-are/t...
The HKH [Hindu Kush Himalaya] region extends 3,500 km over all or part of eight countries from Afghanistan in the west to Myanmar in the east. It is the source of ten large Asian river systems – the Amu Darya, Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra (Yarlungtsanpo), Irrawaddy, Salween (Nu), Mekong (Lancang), Yangtse (Jinsha), Yellow River (Huanghe), and Tarim (Dayan) – and provides water, ecosystem services, and the basis for livelihoods to a population of around 240 million people in the region. The basins of these rivers provide water to 1.9 billion people, a fourth of the world’s population.

Sun Tzu, The Art of War, Decadence in Generals:
 Decadence in Generals

There are eight kinds of decadence in generalship.

First is to be insatiably greedy.

Second is to be jealous and envious of the wise and able.

Third is to believe slanderers and make friends with the treacherous.

Fourth is to assess others without assessing oneself.

Fifth is to be hesitant and indecisive.

Sixth is to be heavily addicted to wine and sex.

Seventh is to be a malicious liar with a cowardly heart.

Eighth is to talk wildly, without courtesy.

On 25 January, German tourist Jessica Brösche was stopped by ICE and held for 45 days (including eight days of solitary confinement). Early in February, Germans Lucas Sielaff and Fabian Schmidt were also detained. In late February, the British backpacker Rebecca Burke was incarcerated for 19 days in the same ICE facility where Karen would later spend six weeks. (Like Karen, Burke had been trying to leave the US when she was detained.) Canadian actor Jasmine Mooney was held in an ICE detention centre for two weeks in March. In July, New Zealander Sarah Shaw and her six-year-old son were detained for three weeks.

Celebrating Malanka and Vasyl is about reclaiming the part of the Ukrainian identity erased by decades under Soviet rule. The custom of ‘walking the goat,’ as the festive performances are also called, is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditional lifestyle, which has circulated for more than a thousand years.

Map: The river Rishi Ganga begins with the glacier called Uttari Nanda Devi. The Dakshini Nanda Devi Glacier also feeds it. Rishi Ganga flows through the Nanda Devi National Park and then into the Dhauli Ganga River. Established in 1982, Nanda Devi National Park has an Inner and an Outer part. High ridges surround both, and access to the basin known as the Sanctuary is very difficult, through complicated glaciers. The other mountains of this region that bear the name Nanda include 6,611m Nanda Khat (which according to Carter means “the bed of the goddess Nanda”); 6,861m Nanda Kot, ”the fortress of the goddess Nanda”, located just outside the ring of peaks that enclose the Nanda Devi Sanctuary; and 6,309m Nanda Ghunti, “the headdress of the goddess.” Other peaks also belong to the kingdom of Nanda, and ”serve her.”

#ElectionSecurity "The downsizing program, spurred by the administration’s animus toward CISA over its election security work, has pushed out key experts, jeopardized important operations and frozen vital partnerships." www.cybersecuritydive.com/news/cisa-hi...
CISA’s new workforce strategy comes as the agency is still reeling from the loss of more than one-third of its workforce under the Trump administration. The downsizing program, spurred by the administration’s animus toward CISA over its election security work, has pushed out key experts, jeopardized important operations and frozen vital partnerships. Many CISA employees are frustrated with their leaders and unsure how to proceed in their jobs, while their industry and government partners are concerned about working relationships with CISA that have deteriorated amid travel restrictions and staff turnover.

"Every man has his Jack-o'lantern ; — in dark night, in broad noon day — in the lonely wild, or in the populous city — each has his Jacko'lantern." #FolkloreThursday #Halloween 🎃 archive.org/details/crui...
A ghoul, holding a lantern to mislead weary travelers, is depicted in the dark of night hiding among a thick stand of rushes on a riverbank .

"To this man Jack comes in the likeness of a bottle of old port, seducing him from sobriety, and leaving him in a quagmire ; to that man, he appears in the form of a splendid phaeton and a pair of greys, driving him into bankruptcy, and dropping him into the open jaws of ruin. To one he presents himself in the guise of a cigar, keeping hiin in a constant cloud ; to another he appears in no shape but that of an old black-letter volume, over which he continues to pore long after his wits are gone. Here you see Jack blazing in scarlet, and luring his dazzled follower on by military trappings alone to the pursuit of glory ; and there Jack jumps about in the brilliant motley of harlequin, tempting a grave and leaden-heeled victim to dance away his nights and days. Jack-o'lantern is to some people, a mouldy hoarded guinea — and these he leads into the miser's slough of despond; with others, when he pays them a visit, he rolls himself up into the form of a dice-box — and then he makes beggars of them. ..." an excerpt from George Cruikshank's Omnibus. The Birth of ‘Deep Time’

Towards the end of the eighteenth century, one man’s theories about the real age of the Earth transformed the way people thought about how truly ancient the planet is.

His name was James Hutton – the Founder of Modern Geology and the pioneer of Deep Time.
