ATN 113: PrEPare
Studied the safety and use of daily oral PrEP among young people under age 18.

Prior to 2018, young people under the age of 18 could not be prescribed PrEP, a critical HIV prevention tool.

The findings of this study led to
the FDA approving Truvada
(TDF/FTC) as a daily oral PrEP
option for adolescents.

Future Impact
Addressing gaps in STI prevention access

ATN 173: foXXy doxy
DoxyPEP is effective & approved for use as STI prevention among men, but not for women. The foXXy doxy study hopes to change that.

Our findings will provide evidence
to inform clinical guidance on DoxyPEP for
women. If proven effective, it will add a biomedical resource to women’s STI prevention toolbox and help to bridge a major gap in women's health research.

Responsibilities
Responsible for direct operational support and implementation of research studies led by Institute on Digital Health and Innovation (IDHI) investigators. Will help support IDHI study operations through research coordination activities. Works directly with IDHI Faculty, Director of Research Operations, and Assistant Director (supervisor) to support launch of research studies, accomplish project deliverables, and mitigate potential barriers to reaching milestones.

Responsible for data management activities of studies led by IDHI and Adolescent Medicine Trials Network (ATN) investigators. Open in Chicago, more locations opening soon! Researching whether the antibiotic DoxyPEP reduces the rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) for young women.

Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) is an FDA-approved antibiotic.
Doxycycline has been safely used for decades, including by teens for acne. When taken after sex, it’s been proven to effectively prevent bacterial STIs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis for some populations like gay/bi men.

Think of it as a “morning-after pill” for STIs.

Bacterial STIs can have long-term negative health impacts.
Bacterial STIs can cause severe uterine infections, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility. But we don’t know if DoxyPEP is effective for more populations like young women, who are often left out of HIV and STI prevention interventions.

So what’s the foXXy doxy study doing? We’re investigating whether two different methods of taking DoxyPEP can be effective for women:
- Taken after condomless sex (on-demand)
- Taken weekly
If DoxyPEP is proven effective, our findings will inform health policy and provide a new tool to incorporate into women’s healthcare.
