GASS celebrates May Day! We’re proud to be a part of the labor movement. Learn about International Workers’ Day history with our plain language post today!
Grey gradient background with a silhouette of a crowd of people with their fists up and someone in the middle on a bullhorn. Text reads: GASS Celebrates May Day! GASS Celebrates International Workers’ Day! The GASS logo is at the bottom. Gradient grey background. There’s a light grey box with text that reads: Today is to celebrate important protests in 1886 about workers’ rights. The protests were about protecting workers’ rights. May Day is a way for all workers to remember that we are powerful when we advocate together! May Day is also called International Workers’ Day. Below the text, there’s an illustration of fists with protest signs.Grey background with a drawing of a crowd with protest signs. Text in a grey box reads: It used to be normal to work 14 hours a day for 7 days a week. That meant no weekends or days off. Bosses said these rules could not change.
In 1886, many workers in Chicago stopped working. They said they would not keep working until they got treated better at work. Police killed some of the workers who stopped working. People got angry because police killed the workers. People all over the world started fighting for companies to treat workers better.Grey gradient background. Text reads: Today it is normal to get 8 hour workdays. It is now normal to not work every day of the week. It is normal because workers fought hard to make companies follow rules about treating workers better.
Today, companies and bosses still say that they can not treat workers better. But that is wrong. Workers like us know that we can keep fighting to be treated better at work. May Day reminds us that workers in the past fought hard and that we can, too.

ASAU is very excited to share that ASAN’s Executive Director, Managers, and Board of Trustees have granted us voluntary recognition! Now that we are an official union, we can do more work to make ASAN better.

I wrote about how neighbors can play a role in helping disabled and aging people plan for and evacuate when wildfires hit at @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/environment/...

Your local government isn't ready to evacuate disabled people
California's fire-prone counties left people to die. Other communities don't have to.

Hi, we're about $851 CA away from hitting 2 million CAD in Crips for E Sims. This is wild. We've also had a big dip in donations lately, understandably from monies going to LA mutual aid. If you can chip in or repost, it really helps. chuffed.org/project/crip... and paypal link 4 US is in there.

Alex is excited to unionize with ASAN in order to bring "Nothing about us without us" fully into the heart of ASAN!
Light green background with a pink circles and curved lines. In the top right corner, there is a circular picture of Alex (white person smiling with glasses and a black hat. They are wearing a white, green, and red keffiyeh and are outside). Text reads: Alex Grandstaff, they/them, Program Manager. "The rallying cry of the autistic self-advocacy movement has been "Nothing about us without us." Every day, ASAN lives that mission by fighting for better public policy, better research, and better programs, ones that are build with autistic people, not around us. By unionizing, I believe ASAU will bring "Nothing about us without us" fully into the heart of ASAN."

Check out why ASAN staff member Mar is excited to unionize!
Light pink background with green circles an circular lines. In the bottom right corner, there is a circular picture of Mar (Asian and white person with short black hair smiling and wearing a red, green, and white keffiyeh in front of trees). Text reads: "As an autistic person of color (amongst other marginalized identities), I face combinations of ableism and racism everywhere I've worked. It's unfortunate that disability rights organizations are historically and currently white dominated spaces. Unionizing is a way to promote equity of all types in the workplace through things like pay equity and other protections. I hope that in unionizing, we can build a more equitable future for ASAN and pave the way for other disability orgs and disabled workers to unionize and do the same!"
