Some points regarding today's U.S. operation in #Venezuela: 1) The effects on the Venezuelan regime may prove to be quite limited. Yes, the president has been captured and extracted, but it appears that Diosdado Cabello and other officials are in control of government-aligned forces as of now.

🇺🇸 throwing Ukraine under the bus. This shows how pointless 🇪🇺’s bootlicking of Trump was. West should have supported Ukraine more decisively (also Biden & Scholz to blame here). Europe still can and must, its security is on the line, too. But this will have a steep price now (at least economically).

What exactly would US security guarantees for Ukraine be worth under an unreliably and volatile Trump adminstration? The continued attempt to entice Trump to commit to European security ignores the realities of Trump’s policies and the necessity of more European responsibility.

So this “peace plan” by Trump for Russia’s war is: give the aggressor what he wants, Ukraine gets nothing from US, Europe can pay to rebuild the country and organize a peacekeeping force (which Russia won’t accept, but we don’t care, because we obviously solved the conflict 🤡🤦‍♂️).

In DLF interview this morning, Jürgen Haardt, CDU spokesman for foreign pol, claims the US nuclear umbrella for Europe won’t be touched by Trump, because Congress would be opposed. In light of 0 assertiveness by Congress re Trump’s foreign pol so far, that’s pretty optimistic (or wishful thinking).
