The Seed of the Sacred Fig hits hard with how state oppression bleeds into a living room, turning it into hell. The opening story of a seed rotting its host directly parallels how a missing gun turns a family against each other, as the father morphs into a monster.

When the boundary between fact, assumption, and connotation blurs, news shifts away from its informative function toward producing judgment. What the report leaves unsaid, the photograph conveys; what the photograph omits, association completes.

My budgie got sick and the private vet's treatment didn't help, so I took him to the university animal hospital today. They ran a full checkup and did some imaging. I really hope the meds work—I'm so worried something bad is going to happen.

The ugly truth is a radical act because it refuses to be marketable. The system can market sadness and resilience but it cannot easily market systemic guilt. Knowing is a burden!

A seasoned writer and translator mentor of mine once explained the palimpsest to me. Before paper existed, back when parchment was used, earlier texts would be scraped away to write new ones. Yet the original writing was never entirely erased; it always lingered, faint beneath the surface. >

In his work The Poetics of Space, Bachelard defines the emotional and refuge-like bond that humans establish with space as "topophilia." According to him, spaces that possess the quality of a sanctuary serve the function of enabling the individual to daydream and maintain their inner integrity.

Whenever I was sad as an undergrad, I’d go to the wooded hilltop above the faculty. I frequently went there in grad school to clear my mind. Though younger, I had no fear. Now, I reach the top but fear entering the woods. Perhaps I was just inexperienced about life back then.

A close-up photograph capturing a stunning, single cactus flower in full bloom, emerging from its spiny green body. The flower, which dominates the upper half of the image, is delicate and funnel-shaped. Its many overlapping petals are primarily with a subtle, very pale pink gradient towards the tips, catching the bright sunlight which gives them depth and shadow. The center of the flower features a vibrant lime-green core surrounded by numerous delicate, golden-yellow stamens. The delicate bloom contrasts with the dark green, ribbed cactus body beneath it, which is heavily covered in clusters of sharp, brownish-yellow spines.

I’ve started watching Cape Fear. This mini-series adaptation starring J. Bardem really brings that raw, unpredictable threat and psychological dread from Scorsese’s 1991 film into a modern light. The tension is incredibly high, and the whole story is built right around the invasion of safe spaces.

I was really looking forward to Spielberg's Disclosure Day, which came out in June, but it ended up being a total letdown. The issue is a mismatch between Spielberg’s instinct for massive, grand storytelling and the actual core of the plot. The narrative is supposed to be a cold, >

My day, today
A low-angle photo, from a low perspective, of a single dandelion with fluffy white seed heads. To the right, numerous tiny dandelion seeds can be seen floating in the air. The sky in the background is a muted shade of blue-grey. In the upper left corner of the image, dark, slightly out-of-focus tree branches and leaves hang down.

Shallow feminism mistakes the film's nature imagery for the ideological stance. Zhao deconstructs patriarchal codes. Agnes is not passive; through her healing, she represents an autonomous female wisdom resisting the world. The film's greatest strength lies in honoring this deep-rooted knowledge.

When analyzing structural shifts in the film industry, it is essential not to confuse corporate management failures with legacies that shaped cinema history.Critiquing Disney’s formulaic strategies by devaluing foundational works like Star Wars—which built modern cinema culture—is a flawed approach.

Tragedy is a tragedy, independent of the race, or geography of those who endure it. A child clinging to their mother’s shoes and weeping expresses the same devastation anywhere in the world—be it in Rwanda or Palestine.. There is no hierarchy of suffering. Unfortunately, in this world, there is.

Jojo Rabbit is one of those movies in the comfortable basket where the film industry finds it safe to fund, narrate, and reward. It is technically well-crafted, balancing humor and tragedy good. But...!
A production still from the film Jojo Rabbit (2019), showing Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) and Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) walking with their bicycles along a European street, set against a backdrop of period details and a chalk notice board.

Defining freedom as a state of mind renders structural barriers, economic inequalities, and mechanisms of oppression invisible. If freedom were merely a mental state, it would imply that a prisoner in a cell or a worker crushed under debt is unfree only because they fail to think correctly.

The difference is that an Aboriginal hunter acts out of biological necessity, and once that need is met, they truly cross into the realm of freedom—painting and storytelling for no other purpose than the act itself. The hunter is free because he knows when the hunt is over. Do we?

Peripatetic notes
An outdoor photograph of a young black goat kid with prominent, long, floppy ears, standing in a dense, lush green pasture and looking directly at the camera with an inquisitive gaze. Several other goats, both black and brown, are scattered in the background among wild grasses and broad-leafed plants, out of focus. Natural daylight.

I watched Project Hail Mary. Technically, it isn't very good, with its disjointed scenes and a fantastical narrative that glosses over the laws of physics. It tips its hat to the communication aesthetics of Arrival and Spielberg’s musical spirit. >

I learned of the passing of Erdoğan Özmen, the psychiatrist and writer whose writings in Birikim magazine I’ve read faithfully for years. His work on mourning feels poignant now. He was someone I deeply admired; despite never meeting him, I felt a paternal presence in his work. May he rest in peace.

I watched the film The Hours. It turned out to be about Virginia Woolf's life; had I known, I wouldn't have watched it. This might be a prejudice, but she was never an important writer to me. I haven't read her books either; the image of the elitist suffering genius diminishes its literary value.

Aki Kaurismäki is one of the directors who best captures the absurdity of the world.
A screenshot of a digital movie profile for the 1985 film Calamari Union, directed by Aki Kaurismäki.
Analysis: The journey from the working-class district (Kallio) to the affluent haven (Eira) is portrayed as a deadly, epic odyssey. By exaggerating the physical danger of a short geographical trip, Kaurismäki suggests that for the marginalized, crossing class boundaries is structurally impossible.
By naming the characters Frank, the film erases their individuality. They function not as distinct agents but as an atomized mass. This reflects a critical view of how socioeconomic structures render the individual anonymous and replaceable.
The deadpan, emotionless acting functions as a Brechtian alienation effect. It prevents the audience from finding emotional comfort in the characters' plight, forcing a detached observation of the hopelessness of their social conditions.
Pekka serves as the reality principle within the collective delusion. He represents the material reality and working-class roots the others are desperately trying to mask. The narrative machinery grinds him down just like the others, proving that in their socioeconomic position, neither conformity (Frank) nor individuality (Pekka) offers an escape.

Today I encountered a profound irony: focusing has been turned into a service with an application. Capitalism first steals your attention, then sells you products to help you focus. What is actually being sold is the image of an efficient person.

Kurosawa shows us how the spirits of cut-down trees mourn and how they will never blossom again. Because nature is not just a resource, but a living, feeling being. He emphasizes that when our connection with it is broken, it will never return.

An armful of hope for everyone... 🕊️
A textured painting in earth tones featuring a girl walking in profile towards the left. She wears a voluminous white dress and walks barefoot. Strapped to her back with rope is a large, heavy bundle of white flowers that look like tulips. In her hands, she gently holds a small white bird at chest level, gazing at it. The background is an abstract, beige-grey surface with rough, visible brushstrokes, giving the image a rustic and serene atmosphere.

Osman Sembene's film Xala is a Wolof word. It is also the film's key metaphor. In both senses, alongside an impotent political administration, there is always a Frenchman with a briefcase. Power changes, but this man never does. The political agenda always brings this film to my mind.
