Wishing you all a delightful end of 2024, filled with light, love and laughter. 🎄✨❤️ This photo is from a solo trip I made to Hokkaido, Japan. I have included a small story from that very interesting adventure below the alt text for anyone interested. 🙂
A black and white, portrait orientated, infrared photograph of a single "Christmas Tree" in a field of wheat. The foreground is soil in a dark shade. The mid-ground field of grain zigzags in from the left in a light shade. Through the middle of the field, there is a diagonal path from right to left in a dark shade breaking the field and the photo in half. Centered on the path is a Christmas tree (cone) shaped evergreen that is similarly dark toned. The wheat field meets the horizon as a hill. The sky is light at the horizon and gradually becomes dark as it rises. It is speckled with soft brush stroke clouds.

The essence of the image is one of calm, peace and hope.

I made this in Hokkaido Japan. I went alone a few years ago, which was a challenge as there is little English spoken, I speak virtually no Japanese and I don't even like most Japanese food.

Difficulty began on arrival. I could not find the car rental place at the little airport. There were no signs I could read and no one spoke English. Eventually I found a counter with a lady. She had a laminated A4 paper with multiple choice questions written in Japanese and English. I chose the one that applied.

The car rental place was a bus ride away - another adventure. And once there another laminated A4 paper. The second of many. Sadly, the car I had reserved specifically with an English speaking GPS, had no such thing. Lots of (friendly) hand gestures later, I accepted that I would need to figure this out on my own. I used Google Maps, but it would not speak to me, so it was basically a very small paper map in the front seat.

A few days later, I learned that stop signs in Japan are not octagonal. They are red triangles and of course, do not say "STOP". Opps. Fortunately there were very few other cars around, so I probably didn't irritate too many people before learning this.

There were many challenges on this trip. but it was overwhelmingly one of my favorite adventures ever. :)

Forest Park 007, 01/13/2019 'All she wants to do is dance! is how I originally captioned this one. Always has been one of my favorite lone tree images. #Photography #BlackAndWhite #Monochrome #Nature #Trees
A black and white image of a lone pine tree on a snowy hill. The tree is a young one with a twisted trunk that creates a dancing vibe.

More Fleeting Reflections - what would be a good title for this one? All done in camera. No Photoshop. No AI.

I've been slack here. My distaste for social media over the last few years has shifted my attention and I forget still that we have a nice place again. Once upon a time I had the opportunity to spend a week in Margate and of course was drawn to the sea to visit the Antony Gormli statue. 1 of ?
A landscape orientated black and white seascape of an Anthony Gormly statue of a single naked human figure standing in the sea, facing the horizon (away from the viewer). The water is very still and the clouds are smooth and wispy with an upward swoosh in the middle. This gives the clouds the feeling of an enormous birds wing in flight, filling most of the sky. In the foreground is a mostly submerged jetty and a few well placed areas of seaweed.

I adore follies. It’s a complicated amalgamation of my delight in their small size, beauty, isolation, impracticality, past exclusivity, and current access. Originally only for the rich but now open for me to visit with a picnic and a camera, they bring me a small quest-like joy. I collect them.
A portrait oriented black and white photo of a triangular folly (small house like structure) isolated in a British landscape. The structure sits on a small hill and has a portal like entrance. It is surrounded by small shrubs and there are many fluffy clouds in the sky above.

The Gothic Temple at Painshill Park in Cobham, England, in near color infrared. This park was my local for many years. I’ve spent a lot of hours there, walking, thinking, chatting, photo-making, cake eating, and tea drinking. So many super fond memories. 💚 Share a place you visit often, please. 😊
A landscape oriented, near-color infrared photo of the Gothic Temple at Painshill Park in Cobham, England. In the foreground are grass and wildflowers bordering a small lake. Beyond the lake are trees and a grassy hill, on top of which is a round, white, single story, gothic style temple with open arches and a many spiked roof. In the sky are scattered clouds and there is a glow above the tree line. Everything is sepia colored except the lake and sky, which are a soft blue.

How to sleep in your fancy, fluffy cat bed, by Jeremy Nightfury. (I have decided there will be cat pics here)
A candid snapshot of a large black cat with a small white v shape on his belly. He is stretched out asleep on his back with half of his body in his beige, fancy, fluffy pet bed and the other half flopped out onto the cream colored sofa. A light green cushion is visible at the top of the frame and a small pair of feet in athletic socks peeks in from below at the bottom right.

Staying in Iceland, but moving on to “that church”. You known the one. If you’ve been there, you shot it. It’s written in law, I think. (1 of 2)
A black and white photograph of a small black chapel with a triangular steeple and two white framed windows. It peeks out from behind a grassy meadow and sits below a vast Icelandic summer sky. In the upper right corner is a foreboding darkness that hints of the harsh weather approaching.

Shall we begin in Iceland? This was a magical few moments that occurred with none of my usual rigorous photographic planning and prepping. I am quite sure that this spontaneity made it all the more delightful - like a gift rather than a hard earned reward.
A landscape orientated black and white seascape photograph of a view across the sea in Iceland. In the distance, shrouded in wispy clouds and soaring birds are three raged sea stacks just off the coast of a steep cliff with a short strand.

I’ve finally arrived, dressed for the party. I don’t even remember requesting this invite so it must have been a long wait. Or someone else did it for me? Whichever, I’m here now. Let’s do this. 😃
A black sleeveless party dress and a ruffles lace collar floating in front of a studio background. An ornate birdcage overflowing with black crow feathers suspended above it. Black and white photo.
