This little cutie came in to Bat Rescue Berkshire today. Just hanging out somewhere unsuitable, she’s a good weight so as long as she passes her flight test this evening she’ll be going home tomorrow, or at least to some more promising habitat next door to the industrial site where she was found

State schools finally get their big day: ‘All of a sudden, playing at Lord’s becomes cool’
The inaugural Knight-Stokes Cup was a special occasion not just for the teenagers playing on Lord’s hallowed turf, but for the English game as a whole State-school cricket has had its day at Lord’s, at last. On a ground that has this summer hosted men’s and women’s international Tests, the Women’s T20 World Cup final and the Hundred finals, on Thursday four school teams played in front of the Pavilion and Father Time for the Knight-Stokes Cup, named after two state-educated cricketers who have captained England’s Test teams. Heather Knight and Ben Stokes recorded video messages for pupils from Altrincham Grammar School, John Hampden Grammar School, Penistone Grammar School and Chelmsford County High School before they competed in the boys’ and girls’ finals. The privileges did not stop there – full use of the Pavilion dressing rooms, lunch and media duties made this a day to remember and inspire. Continue reading...

Stay away yourself, by all means, but find someone who knows what they are doing to help the bat. Not just for animal welfare reasons, although those should be enough, but also to ensure the bat is not picked up by a child, pet or wild animal that will certainly not be likely to act with caution.

I’m afraid this not the case - 2 of our 17 species are known to carry rabies in small numbers www.bats.org.uk/about-bats/b.... As long as you aren’t bitten or scratched you are going to be safe though

We had one flying around the old theatre during a performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream in the 1980s, it was magical!

“The rabies virus is transmitted via a bite or scratch from an infected animal, or from its saliva coming into contact with your mucosa (eyes, nose, mouth or a wound).” From the BCT website referenced above

Yes, anyone handling bats, whether as rehabbers or researchers, has to be vaccinated against rabies. Very small numbers of a couple of UK bat species have been found to have or carry a rabies-like virus www.bats.org.uk/about-bats/b...

UK vets have little to no experience of bats and are rarely vaccinated against rabies so often just euthanise. The best course of action is to contact the National Bat Helpline run by @batconservation.bsky.social volunteers who will give you the details of experienced, vaccinated local bat carers

Rose-Ann @athena42.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Not the case in the UK or Europe, don’t know about the US. And as long as you aren’t bitten or scratched even one with a lyssavirus won’t give you rabies. Hence the advice to wear suitable gloves or use a cloth to pick it up. An experienced bat handler is unlikely to get bitten by such a small bat

Yes, she’s doing fine. If the weather had been dry last night we’d have released her. If the forecast is to be believed, we should be able to do it in the next few days

The chance of finding her again is so remote it’s not really worth the slight risk to her survival by ringing her. The previous MERL bat, Merlin, was ringed as part of a national, Natural England licensed project to find out more about the rarer Nathusius pipistrelle but he hasn’t been seen since

These gloves are fine for a tiny young bat like Merle if you’re an experienced, vaccinated handler familiar with all UK species. I’d have been wearing thicker gloves for bigger bats and other species.

Annoyingly, just as we get Merle to a safe release weight (4.5g, less than a 20p coin) the drought ends! Hopefully there’ll be a dry evening later in the week for her to fly free again 🦇
