We can recognise the achievements of navigation without celebrating conquest and enslavement. That's why Indigenous Peoples' Day matters. History doesn't become less accurate when we stop glorifying the conquerors. It becomes more accurate when we finally listen to the people who survived them.

Some Americans get more offended by removing a statue of Columbus than by acknowledging what happened to the people whose lands were colonised. Nobody needs to pretend European exploration wasn't historically significant. But historical significance isn't the same as moral greatness.

Columbus himself participated in the enslavement of Indigenous people. This isn't some modern conspiracy to rewrite history. It's documented history that generations were taught to overlook. And here's the absurd part.

The Taíno people had communities, agriculture, trading networks, languages and cultures long before Columbus arrived. They didn't need Europeans to discover that they existed. And while introduced diseases caused enormous devastation, colonial brutality made the catastrophe worse.

Columbus reached the Caribbean in 1492. What followed wasn't simply an exciting chapter in European exploration. It included enslavement, forced labour, dispossession and the catastrophic destruction of Indigenous societies.

Christopher Columbus didn't discover America. He arrived somewhere millions of people already lived. Yet 534 years later, the United States still has a federal holiday named after him.

It just needs enough people to distrust democracy, hate their neighbours and vote against their own interests. The question is no longer whether foreign interference exists. It's why democratic governments have been so reluctant to expose its full extent.

From Brexit to Trump's rise and the growing European far right, Russian influence operations have repeatedly targeted the institutions and alliances that constrain Moscow. The Kremlin doesn't need everyone to love Putin.

That doesn't mean Russia decided the Brexit result. Interference and decisive influence are different claims. It does mean voters deserve to know exactly what happened, who helped, how much money was involved and which political networks benefited. And Britain isn't alone.

A foreign authoritarian regime could exploit political divisions, amplify nationalist grievances and manipulate online debate while presenting the result as the pure expression of democratic will.

Russia interfered in Brexit. Britain's prime minister now says his government has confirmed it. Ten years after the referendum, Andy Burnham has publicly acknowledged what successive British governments failed to properly investigate. But here's the bigger scandal.

The implications go well beyond damaged servers. The infrastructure underpinning AI, cloud computing and digital services is becoming a physical battlefield. And the world is only beginning to confront what that means.

Russia spent years exploiting the internet to influence Western politics. Now Ukraine is physically attacking the infrastructure powering Russia's digital economy. Ukrainian drones have struck two major Yandex data centres, including a facility housing supercomputers used for AI development.

That is not democracy collapsing overnight. That is democracy being professionally serviced for parts.

As an Australian watching America, it is wild watching a country call itself the world’s greatest democracy while unelected judges help decide who votes, which votes count, how districts are drawn, and how much money can flood the system.

Maybe it was obedient people proudly doing useful work for destructive systems, then sneering at the people trying to stop the damage. Activists are not scum. Scum are the people watching the world burn who still think the real moral problem is someone holding a sign.
