Mandated Shunning by authoritarian and coercive groups is ELDER ABUSE. It especially damaging to families and to SOCIETY when a parent or grandparent becomes an elderly, vulnerable adult who needs care.
Predatory Alienation laws must be enacted to protect families from groups that isolate their members from family and friends in order to manipulate them. In this video, a tragic example of a Jehovah's Witness man with dementia illustrates this problem, which is a public health crisis.

This ground-breaking research is the first to focus on faith-based, mandated shunning as practiced by multiple faith groups. This research will take an estimated 3 years and $300K to complete.
Results from both the quantitative (survey) & qualitative (interviews) portions of the study will be analyzed, published, and peer-reviewed for use by survivors, lawmakers, judges, therapists/psychologists, human rights activists, & government officials around the world.
WHAT IS MANDATED SHUNNING?
Mandated shunning occurs when an organization forces its members to ignore and isolate former members due to ideological or theological differences. Mandated shunning even prohibits simple social gestures, such as saying "hello" or sharing a meal. This practice is commonly used by high-control groups to deter members from leaving the group or challenging its practices.
Some groups who practice mandated shunning are Jehovah’s Witnesses, Ultra-Orthodox Jews, Exclusive Brethren, Amish, Bahá'í Faith, Geelong Revival Centre, Muslims, and Scientologists. Membership in just these eight organizations numbers in the tens of millions worldwide.
Mandated shunning is a form of spiritual abuse and a fundamental violation of the principles found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, it escapes prosecution because legal professionals are deceived into thinking that shunning is a personal decision instead of an enforced organizational practice.
