Well duh, we consume more oil but we need a lot less of it to produce the same, is the point.

The big difference in this crisis vs. the oil crises from the past is that the world economy now needs a lot less oil to run.

The Gordon Ramsay series is definitely my kind of jam when it comes to guilty pleasures, food stuff, top chefs stuff. But my god, a six-hour ad for a new restaurant is a bit much isn't it?

It makes sense to gloat about how Bitcoin has no intrinsic value when it crashes, I agree completely with it. But just realise that has nothing to do with its price, eventually it will surge again and you'll have to deal with the other guys doing exactly the same, it's a very obnoxious cycle.

Those people are taking the fucking piss on so many levels that it's a wonder we don't have guillotines back in the streets yet.

Incredible numbers out of Spain. The Eurozone labour market IS the Spanish labour market.

If you loved that shining beacon of stability and prosperity that was the UK in 2022 you're going to love your new Reform government. Maybe time for a name change.

Two ways to look at the Free Trade Agreement with India, "the mother of all deals": - It's an absolute nothingburger at the macro level right now for Europe. - But, the potential for growth is huge given the very low starting point and India's growth prospects.

It's 2026 in America and a bunch of masked goons can literally execute you on the streets with the full support of the government. I don't think we're really capable of fully comprehend the gravity of the situation yet, it will take years to look back to be able to show how insane this was.

It's hard not to be cynical about the science ("science?") when the analysis is "blah blah nonsense extreme scenarios but a plausible one is 0.3"

This may be a plain vanilla take but the Union Jack is a really cool design. If only it had a dragon to represent Wales, it would kick major ass.

Don't worry UK friends, it's only two more months of pure winter misery. After that it's one month of hoping to catch a glimmer of light, then the occasional glorious day in spring and boom, it's summer. Which let's face it, it's not that great but feels like heaven for us poor tortured bastards.

Got it, didnt realised you meant the 77bn as the increase, not the accumulated sum, looked very small, thanks!
100
Ángel Talavera @atalaveraecon.bsky.social · 08/01/2026
Or is $77bn the total US deficit, not the deficit with the EU?

Ángel Talavera @atalaveraecon.bsky.social · 08/01/2026
Where are you getting $77bn, I have $191bn January to October?

I'd love to see which European government is going to make the first move of sending troops to Greenland as a deterrent against the US.

I said realistically.
110
Ángel Talavera @atalaveraecon.bsky.social · 04/01/2026
So if the US actually decided to take over Greenland with some bs pretext, what can Europe do apart from "strongly urging not to"? I mean realistically. This is the burning question no one has a clear answer to.

Ni cotiza que vamos a tener un artículo de opinión más temprano que tarde pidiendo que EEUU haga lo mismo en España que ha hecho en Venezuela.

There are a lot more things to bringing up children than parks, obviously, but I feel this is a particular aspect where London is so underrated that I feel it needs to be shouted from the rooftops at times.
030
Ángel Talavera @atalaveraecon.bsky.social · 30/12/2025
This is probably influenced by my own upbringing in Barcelona. A terrific city, and with a livelihood on the streets that I miss every day. But everywhere you look around there is cement and people living in flats with a small balcony. Having a small child now I wonder how I'd transition to that.

Ángel Talavera @atalaveraecon.bsky.social · 30/12/2025
Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion but, barring the cost (admittedly a huge issue) I think London is a terrific place to bring up children. Not only do you have the amenities of a global mega city, but you have the type of green spaces that can only usually be found outside cities.

Not sure if this is the case in US stats, but a problem over here is that real income measures do not account properly for the huge rise in housing prices, as they're deflated using CPI, so they tend to overstate families purchasing power.

Momentous day for all nerdy economists who have been clamouring for months that Irish distortions need to be filtered out of Eurozone aggregates 👏

It could very well be! ticks a lot of boxes, but if Lagarde's choice taught us something is that no one has a clue 😅

My very unfounded intuition is that the next president will be closer to a more traditional hawk.
110
Ángel Talavera @atalaveraecon.bsky.social · 15/12/2025
The intuitive sense that the ECB maintains a hawkish bias is confirmed by the analysis of their communication. As inflation goes down, hawkishness is moderating, but I suspect the bias will remain for some time. And I think will also shape the election of Lagarde's successor.

The US is much richer than Europe, but less so when you adjust for them working more. Despite being poorer we're not converging with them. Despite being poorer we live longer and quality of life is better under some measures. There you go, job done, no need for 3000-word essays to explain this.

Ángel Talavera @atalaveraecon.bsky.social · 07/12/2025
+1 You can see how Europe is getting incrementally defensive, slowly but surely, and the direction of travel is only one way, up. Not a controversial forecast to make at this point by any means, but people not paying attention may be underestimating how quickly the sense of urgency is building.

Relaxed attitude? Is this supposed to refer to regulations? Because it's literally the number one concern of Spaniards when asked about it.

On the surface, Eurozone growth looks pretty decent all things considered. But when looking under the hood, the picture worsens considerably: - Ireland (4% of the EZ) accounts for 40% of growth - Spain (10%) accounts for 20% - Half of the Eurozone is growing at 0.5% or below

Because one pharmaceutical company in Ireland exporting a weight loss drug now changes the entire export series for the Eurozone, so the aggregate becomes very informative.
