I think anyone can read your words and judge for themselves what they literally convey, intended or not. Regardless, retaliation for publishing public data says more about the retaliators than anything else. That is the attitude that needs to change. Nobody, including the PI, owns public data.

I see no gain in personal slights. FWIW, I am content with my place in the community. Being a good member also means using public resources, paid for by not-us, wisely. We're stewards: we get to shape what data are taken, have first access, and get paid to analyze them. But the public owns them.

Thayne Currie 🇺🇦 @astrothayne.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Yes, already know that. 🙄 It may be *better* to contact for many reasons. But it is 100% decent and acceptable to analyze and publish data well past the proprietary period w/o contacting the PI. I do not have the right to get upset if someone else publishes data I took but didn't publish.

Thayne Currie 🇺🇦 @astrothayne.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Nope. Do not agree. This reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of data ownership.

Thayne Currie 🇺🇦 @astrothayne.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I think that is 'nice' to do and could be advantageous. But I do not agree it should be required or considered bad form when the data are years past the proprietary period end. Data acquisition is a privilege, not a right. Contrary to some opinions I've seen, we do not 'own' it like we own a car

Thayne Currie 🇺🇦 @astrothayne.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Hope so. I think we should normalize the position that analyzing public data (once it becomes public) as 100% acceptable, especially for facilities like JWST. And the funding of said efforts through archival programs.

Thayne Currie 🇺🇦 @astrothayne.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I'm strongly pro-'this'. But there are a *lot* of people who think analyzing, and publishing public data --even if it became public years ago -- is somehow bad form. And they will retaliate against you if you do these things (has happened to me mult times). Hopefully, that attitude is waning.

I have far fewer qualms with using LLMs for internal reviews of things *I* have written, though (e.g. as a better version of a spellchecker/grammar check).

(less "curmugeony" version of response) AAS Journals gives guidelines on using LLMs for articles: here, for referees. FWIW, I have never used an LLM to review a paper for me.

Are @scixcommunity.bsky.social and ADS not working anymore for citations from arxiv postings? The last time where they seemed to consistently work was ~late July.

I remember being a very 'green', junior reviewer (barely out of grad school) and was very stoked that Chris Sneden sent me such a separate "thank you" note for my first ApJL review assignment. These things are much appreciated.

Roman is such a good, brilliant idea that launched ahead of time and on budget. Insane that it was on the chopping block *multiple times*. I don't think we are ready for all the crazy stuff it is going to find.

Very excited for the #NASARoman telescope launch. Just as a reminder, our group played a role for the Roman Coronagraph, finding the targets it will look at to test Earth-imaging technologies in space for the first time. bigthink.com/starts-with-... www.maunakeaobservatories.org/stories/suba...

How will #NASARoman see exoplanets that are close to its host star? With its Coronagraph Instrument, which will block as much of the starlight as possible while letting the exoplanet's light through to the detector. It does this with an opaque mask that covers the target star. 🔭

Teams inside the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida encapsulate the agency’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope within the payload fairing on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, ahead of mating to a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Encapsulation shields the spacecraft during rollout, ascent, and the early phases of flight. Roman will investigate dark energy and dark matter, conduct a statistical census of planetary systems, and enable a broad range of additional astrophysics research. As an added bonus, I believe we report the first contrast curves for SCExAO/CHARIS after the AO3K upgrade: Typical performance is in between that of gamma Boo and eta Uma/eps Uma. We can probably do a bit better than gamma Boo when the seeing/AO correction is the best.

Thayne Currie 🇺🇦 @astrothayne.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Finally, we show that adding our fourth target – gamma Boo – which is not currently on the Roman CPP team reference star list would improve schedulability for the tech demo’s key targets.
