Been in Bath for the UK/Ireland Transients Meeting! Felt my talk went really well too. Pretty beautiful city, although the distance from Edinburgh means I'm taking the train back tomorrow. Oh no, more time to look at the city near sunset time... woe is me...

Terrible news. Aside from learning more about the universe, we're not going to get much economic growth by cutting science funding. (If only we had a Prime Minister who was interested in supporting the north, and Manchester in particular, who could stop this.) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

So they went ultra defensive complete with changes, and continued with that despite the clear shift for the worse, and are now losing. Go figure!

Sure, Zoom ain't perfect, but it's way better than Teams in my and many other people's experiences, and forcing everyone into one option without addressing any concerns raised (which they asked for) is kinda crap.

Marcin Glowacki @astromarcin.bsky.social · 13/02/2026
The email we got isn't great either. It starts with 'Dear ,' - they forgot to address us. Then the claim of this to help save jobs - for a uni currently _in financial surplus_. Yet too poor to afford even a few Zoom licenses for departments to share. How many jobs will be saved by this? 🙄

They asked for input last year about the idea. A bucnh of us responded, highlighting where Teams fails, issues with forcing visiting people giving seminars to have it downloaded when they may not even have a Windows machine, etc. No response to these points, just an outright 'no Zoom at all'.

Uni of Edinburgh is forcing everyone onto Teams, rip Zoom login. -_- I don't think I know anyone in academia who things Teams suffices for telecons, workshops, colloquia, etc! 🧵

To be fair the microburst idea is just a theory for what could have caused the signal we saw here.

I helped find this! It was quite a pain actually, because it was so 'close' - had to drop antennas to be able to get the signal from the ASKAP voltage data.

Gave a talk at Dynamic Radio Sky last night! About our findings with scattering correlations for FRB host galaxies. I really do mean 'last night' - it was 12:30am for me... and probably the best possible time given the schedule! Better than not being able to give the talk at all. #timezones

We found there are some significant correlations! Scattering timescales correlates with compactness (stellar surface density), mass-weighted age, and gas-phase metallicity. Meanwhile, |RM| increased in hosts with more edge-on disks.

Marcin Glowacki @astromarcin.bsky.social · 03/07/2025
I put out a preprint recently! Investigated how FRB properties (such as scattering timescale and |RM|) we measured for 35 FRBs localised via ASKAP and the CELEBI pipeline (plus a few in the lit), correlated (or not) with global host properties. #FRB arxiv.org/abs/2506.23403

The signal was a right pain to find, I might add. Thanks to the rest of the CRAFT team involved who helped me debug a bunch of things and figure out this was actually really darn close, and super short timescale (10s of milliseconds!) The paper itself: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3...
